Also, any opinion on having the players be anonymous or not? We don't have to do that if people would prefer.

Maybe this time I'll pay attention. I still don't understand how we can call it diplomacy, there is only war, no trade.

Wait, you really want to play???

Definition of diplomacy
1 :the art and practice of conducting negotiations between nations

The players in Diplomacy are at war, yes. You must conduct the negotiations necessary to win that war. I honestly don't understand why you keep insisting that "trade" (necessarily) has anything to do with it.

I do want to play.

But to argue my point, negotiations require leverage; How do you prevent Iran from developing Nuclear Weapons? You threaten them with trade sanctions if they do, which would cripple their economy, which would destroy the leaders ability to govern.

It works internally too; see the current Catalan crisis in Spain.

If the only resolution is alliance building and attacking each other, you have a perpetual war.

I'm all for it if you stick with it this time. Not that your non-participation didn't help me immensely.

Well, our game ended, didn't it? See?... not perpetual war. ;)

I mean, sure, this classic board game with an elegantly minimal set of actions available doesn't model every possible negotiation available in the real world. But the key to winning is negotiating with what leverage you have.

Items that might be used as leverage:
1) The strength of your armies and navies
2) The information you have about other nations' plans
3) The "information" you are willing to "share" with other nations
4) The weight of your power of persuasion
5) Weak human emotions

Indeed there is! And one more after that. A prize for whoever can recruit one more person!

(The prize is you get to play a game of Diplomacy.)

No, I wasn't. The developers of Backstabbr tweeted that they pushed an update last night that resulted in several glitches. They rolled back the update a bit ago, and now I can play.

It occurred to me to put in a plug to the new players (if they are checking the forums?) about the sandbox mode available on this website we're using. You can create a sandbox from the current game state and then play out your orders, as well as submit orders for the other players.

I have a very good grasp on the rules, and I still used it every single turn last game to make sure I wasn't making some bonehead mistake. (The interface WILL allow you to issue invalid orders.) Sometimes it's useful for pointing out things you may not have thought about, like where people are going to be able to retreat to, or just exactly what the board might look like after a turn is over.

Anyway, I think it's a great tool to take advantage of.

I only used the sandbox once last game, but it was a godsend. I'll be using it more this time. I'll also be paying more attention to the retreat rules, lest I find an unwanted shrimp on the barbie. :p
