Amazon Making Lord of the Rings Show

...Or are they?

I wrote the headline based on the press release, but then I saw this bit.

Quote:
Set in Middle Earth, the television adaptation will explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. The deal includes a potential additional spin-off series.
Now, this could be padding out the books a bit to allow for more content. But it could also be a real prequel, or significant side stories.

Warner Bros made a fortune adapting Lord of the Rings, and later The Hobbit, into feature films. Amazon has a fortune to spend on content. So you decide how epic this new adaptation will look compared to the films.

What's left to tap into? The Silmarillion? Unfinished Tales?

It's a medieval world with a rich history, one of the richest ever established. They don't need to follow a specific story that's already all written out. I'd be interested in a new story told in an earlier time of the setting, approved by Tolkien's estate. People love all the non-Skywalker stories that get told in the Star Wars universe, including ones that go into the past like the Old Republic stuff.

I'd be perfectly fine with a new story Shadow of Mordor style. Just as long as it's lore friendly.

Because they were poorly written/acted/directed? They weren't bad because they were prequels they were bad because they were bad. That doesn't discount the well-written expanded universe stories for Star Wars or other large fictional universes.

Not to mention they didn't follow the books very well either. The first movie wasn't bad for that. The second went of course. And the third went so far off the rails they derailed the thing. I mean, the third film was just a bunch of made up shit.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out. I love Tolkien's world, and the movies were largely great, so more of that could be very welcome.

I have never seen Godfather part 2, so maybe it isn't trash, but I have no way of knowing. At best, prequels are flashbacks or expository dialog dumps stretched out to a novel or comic arc or a feature length movie, or worse a whole TV series... Like Star Trek Discovery.

This is a waste of money that could have gone towards at least AT LEAST a dozen other sagas out there that deserve their time in the spotlight.

The cow has been milked to death please stop and let us proceed through the literature that followed for the love of god. I've read the hobbit and the lord of the rings at least eight times but let's not squeeze money out of a stone.

The cow has been barely touched! Six movies, a handful of video games, some negligible attempts in the past...the damned thing is practically new!

I want a LotR cinematic universe, stat. You can keep the rest of your nerd crap!

Agreed. How many Star Wars stories are there when you combine all of the movies, comics, novels, games, tv shows, etc? Star Trek? Harry Potter? Marvel?

Middle Earth is one of the greatest fictional settings ever created. We have the original books, three excellent movies, three not-so-great movies, an old cartoon movie, and a bunch of middling to good video games. I am all for more fiction that explores the larger universe. It won't all be great but in the right hands a lot of it could be.

So this series will be based on "unexplored stories". Hmmm, that could be The Silmarillion or Unfinished tails. Also, didn't Tolkien's son write some stories set in Middle Earth?

Elves, dwarves, hobbits, ents. Who would object to more stories about any of those?
