Just saying there's a lot of inspired sagas out there eg. game of thrones that could do very well with the right amount of budget and acting.

LOTR is a gateway book to the world of fantasy. It was never a one stop shop. To retread old ground is like having a girlfriend who only does missionary.

Folks complaining about more Lord of the Rings content after six movies in 13 years. Meanwhile there are like 6 Marvel movies each year and what seems like at least 3 dozen TV series.

With that said, I do agree that there are a lot of other great fantasy series out there that could use a well-done TV/film adaption. The Earthsea Cycle, for example.

All other fantasy settings are just riffs on Tolkien anyway, right? :P

Yeah and Stevie Ray Vaughan was just extrapolating from what Chuck Berry was doing. But they ain't equivalent.

I just feel it's just more banking on brand name recognition than any real love of the genre. I get people like going back to their childhood and watching terrible thunderlizards, reliving infinite crisis/new earth/infinite worlds/crisis of infinite earths batman/superman origin stories for the fuckgillionth time but now that the general masses has an understanding of the foundation of modern fantasy why not give them the next level content?

You introduce your kid to super mario 1. You give them super mario 2. Then you give them metroid. Castlevania. Mega man. Contra. Bubble Bobble. Bad Dudes. Double Dragon. Final Fantasy 6. Half-Life. There is just so much greatness out there and we're just thinking oh hey you liked that here's super mario 3, mario 64, mario safari? which was great but there's other ip's too.

So they shouldn't have made Super Mario Odyssey? Or Breath of the Wild?

It's also odd to bring up Nintendo in a discussion like this. While they bank on their big IPs Nintendo is also one of the most creative of the big game companies. They use their big names to rake in the cash and keep the company running but they also invest in weird ideas and new IPs like ARMS and Splatoon.

A lot of media companies do similar things (although I'd agree that not enough do). They're going to milk their big franchises as much as possible, but some of the money they make goes to fund smaller projects that might become the next big thing. You can't expect big companies with stockholders to only throw heaps of money at new IPs. Disney's going to crank out a new Star Wars movie every year but they also create original stories that sometimes end up becoming mega hits.

If that's the worst analogy you'll I've ever heard, you need to come back to the Midwest.

You guys know that Lord of the Rings is a series of novels and not an Action Figure line?

What does that have to do with anything? There are shitty ongoing cash-grab franchises in every form of media, but that doesn't mean we should reject all sequels/prequels/etc. I'll gladly accept a world that has both Call of Duty XXVIII and Super Mario Odyssey. I can ignore the former and love the latter.

Wait, why is Call of Duty shitty? I mean, you don't have to like it buts it's well made.

Yes there's plenty of room for more middle earth stuff but it is taking a disgruntling amount of time for OTHER IPS to be recognized that are deserving of attention also.

I'll watch it anyway but I will be very unhappy if I have to wait til I'm 60 before they even begin to think of adapting something like steven erikson's work. A discussion with people who only recognize lord of the rings it would be like only talking about harry potter or some kid who only plays call of duty. It is a rich genre with so many flavours, styles, concepts and perspectives.

I don't think that not making a Lord of the Rings TV show necessarily means it's more likely that some lesser known IP will be turned into a TV show in its place. There's an argument to be made that it might actually help those lesser fantasy IPs attract funding and talent.

Here's a possible scenario: HBO snatches up Game of Thrones and breaks ground by becoming a hugely successful fantasy television show, but maybe it's a fluke that can't be reproduced. Amazon grabs the biggest fantasy license and turns that into a television show that then becomes popular and continues the trend. Now other companies like Netflix and Hulu are going to be looking to follow the trend and that's when smaller IPs will get adapted.

It's happened before. Harry Potter broke ground for young adult book series being turned into successful movie series. The Hunger Games continued the trend. Then a bunch of other series got adapted that wouldn't have if the bigger IPs, which were safer bets, got made first.

This conversation sounds like something that might happen in a marketing meeting.

This is the weirdest form of fandom I have ever seen.
