Since the semester began I haven't used MP yet, but that's the one place I'm skeptical of trying it out on. Dunno, just seems too good to be true. But one of these days I'll give it a go. BAM takes it as well, as does apparently Nighthawk. They did just send out and updated ToS, so who knows if that still holds true.

I am waiting on the whole thing to go belly up. Seems to good to last!

I looked into how the card actually works, too. It's essentially a limited debit card. When you reserve a ticket on the app it's not making any kind of purchase with the theater. Instead, MoviePass puts the price of the ticket into the debit card which can only be used to make a purchase from the theater you selected.

The card uses real money on a MasterCard debit card and the theater gets every cent of it. Because of this theaters cannot block MoviePass unless they block MasterCard entirely.

However, MoviePass does get to decide what theaters they will let you buy tickets from, and that's where their leverage will come from. MoviePass seems confident that if they can get a large enough block of moviegoers hooked on their service that they can steer those customers around, either rewarding theaters and movie studios that help support them financially or punishing those that don't.

We'll see if that works but for now when you use MoviePass you're essentially getting your tickets mostly paid for by millions of dollars of investment cash.

I guess I'm fine with that? I don't really see a problem.

I think the problem is just the worry that it won't last.

It very well might not. But that's more a worry for the people funding the company than any customers.

As long as it lasts there isn't much downside for a customer, unless you're so disinterested in movies that there isn't even one release a month you'd be interested in seeing in a theater (provided your average ticket cost is more than $10).

I question some of the thought processes at play here, but I've already had that discussion multiple times on the site.

(Also, average price of a ticket for me is $5. )

It does seem like a great deal for many people.

What, do you have to crank the projector yourself?

No, but I do have to go on a Tuesday.

That WOULD be a benefit of getting this pass, I could see movies on other days of the week.

You turn frugality into high art. It's like watching Picasso paint with brushes he bought at a garage sale!

(I say that with love, natch)

Used my pass today to see Shape of Water (big old meh). I'm only a couple movies away from seeing all the best picture noms, which wouldn't happen if I was paying per movie.

I imagine it's even better for places like Alamo or Movie Grill cause they wont you come a punch to kill you with premium priced concessions. Probably should enjoy while you can. When MoviePass comes trying to get a deal, they might not play ball. I read that's why MP and AMC has issues.
