Begun These Streaming Wars Have

Someday you'll be able to tell your kids about the good old days. The days where you could subscribe to just a few streaming services and have access to just about everything. Because those days are ending, and the people who wished for a la carte cable are about to get their monkey paw'd wish.

via Variety

Quote:
Disney is ending its distribution agreement with Netflix for new movie releases, while itís also buying majority ownership of BAMTech ó the streaming-video company founded by Major League Baseball ó in a $1.58 billion deal.

The moves set a clear course for the media giant to launch Netflix-style direct-to-consumer internet services from ESPN and Disney. Disney said will end its distribution agreement with Netflix for subscription streaming of new movie releases, beginning with the 2019 theatrical slate.
Disney - parent company of Marvel, Pixar, ESPN, ABC and Lucasarts - is currently the biggest player to spurn the likes of Netflix, Hulu and Amazon for their own streaming platform, but they're not the first. CBS launched 'CBS All Access' earlier this year with The Good Wife spinoff 'The Good Fight' and 'Star Trek Discovery' coming later this year at a cost of $60/year for commercial-supported and $100 for commercial-free. Next year will see the launch of a still-unnamed Warner Bros streaming service, with a live action Titans series and season 3 of the animated Young Justice as the first properties. This service is expected to be the digital home of all WB properties, including DC Comics, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Turner Broadcasting and more.

It is widely expected that most of the other major hollywood studios will follow suit in the coming years (Universal is attached to NBC, Fox is obviously part of the larger Fox empire, with only Sony lacking a greater TV presence).

This means that anyone wanting to sample all of the streaming fruits will have to pony up more and more cash each month. The big streaming behemoths have known this day was coming for a while now, which is why their focus now is on cultivating their own properties and projects, rather than waiting for other content creators to sell them streaming rights. But it has the net effect of giving us what so many were requesting for decades: the ability to subscribe to the channels we want, and skip the ones we don't.

Yeah, my wife was telling me about this last night. Disney does seem like it could have some clout to make this work for them.

The nice thing is you can just subscribe to each one as you want it. So get like, Disney for a month and then cancel, etc.

The question is, if everyone and their dog starts their own streaming service, are they all going to want $10 a pop, or will they recognize that an individual channel/network might only be worth, say, a buck a month?

I expect they'll all stick to the $8 - $15 range that's been established by all the other services...for now.

Not long after everyone has their own streaming service I predict people will get annoyed with having to have so many accounts and subscriptions. Then someone will come along and create some kind of bundling service and we're right back to where we started.

Great, streaming is going to fragment until it's just as expensive as cable and somehow manages to have an even worse customer experience.

I can't wait to hear the term we come up with for reverse cable cutting.

I am going to miss the netflix system but hell I haven't been using it for a while now due to the other method that they won't shut down any time soon I give them a year and a half to solve that problem and even then it'll just adapt.

I don't have the patience for this. Netflix is barely holding onto my subscription money as is. The piecemeal future of content is really not exciting me. I might need to take up reading classic literature at the Library just to get away from subscription service bills some day. I hope they're still open.

As someone who's about to enter a writing program might I encourage you to read contemporary literature instead?

OT: this is going to increase piracy, imo. Idjits.

Well It was a nice run, moved away from cable because didn't want to pay for hundreds of channels and shows I never watched, started pirating and then streaming got good and could watch the few things that I wanted for a reasonable monthly fee and it was covenant and easy, they started to break up so ended up with a couple of services, now they're breaking up even more I might as well go back to the hassle of pirating or cable to get everything in one place again.

I'm just not gonna join Disney's service. I pay one bill for this shit, and the more the publishers fracture content the more likely I am to go to the one place that has it all for free anyways. You know the place.

My imagination.

So many people have been screaming for a la carte and I have been telling anyone that will listen that this is what it was going to look like. Nobody really wants a la carte. Well... ...they do but not at the cost and inconvenience it is going to bring. I predict that with enough fragmentation in the streaming market it is going to start pushing people back to cable. There will always be the cord-nevers but those that cut cable to jump on the streaming bandwagon will probably start jumping back to cable.

This is almost certainly going to increase piracy, and make those that already pirate feel vindicated.
