Fortnite Launching Battle Royale Mode Later This Month

Pick any point in game news/PR in the last 15 years and there's That Game. A title that captures the public's imagination to such a degree that every publisher begins trying to get in on the action. I've seen this for MOBAs, card games, horde mode shooters, world builders, kart racers. And now we're seeing it for Battle Royale games thanks to Playerunknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG).

Last week Rockstar announced a BR-esque mode for GTA 5 dubbed Smuggler's Run. Now we have Epic Games' worldbuilding shooter, Fortnite, announcing their own hundred person mode.

I've only played a few minutes of Fortnite, but it presents a unique take on the BR genre. The ability to construct traps and defensive structures should have a major impact on the BR genre's biggest gripe: turtling. Whether this makes it less viable or more remains to be seen.

The Fortnite Battle Royale mode is live now on their test server, and it will come to the public servers (as a separate mode, of course) on Sep 26.

I've been playing this for a week.

Quite a bit of fun and a new mode is welcome. Played a couple matches and look forward to playing it when there's actual rewards.

Does it look to be P2W now that there is going to be a battle royal mode? Part of what stopped me from buying in early is success looks very dependent on micro transactions.

Nah, it's pay for convenience. If you pay you will speed up your progression. In the end we all end up the same and everything's shareable so if you have a friend who paid to 'win' they can just give you stuff anyway. I've got a friend who got the ultimate founders and he's hooked me up with a lot of high tier weapons so it's been ez breezy

Yeah, that sounds like pay to win. Everything can be gotten, either through a shit ton of grinding or through money.

either way you have to grind there's upgrade catalysts that can only be gotten through gameplay, the founders packs just give you a leg up on getting good shit right away. i haven't spent a cent and sides the battle royale portion has nothing to do with the pve aspect of the game and they are only introducing cosmetics like pubg to it later down the road. if my friend didn't give me the key i would probably get the game for the pubg mode anyway since it's got a lot more aspects to it than the standard BR game
