Gamestop Lists Prices for DJ Hero , Band Hero & More

The ever popular game retailer Gamestop may have let the cat out of the bag in regards to pricing of Activision's upcoming slate of games. In particular the 'big box' variety of games coming this fall.

Their online listings they show a $120 price point for the bundle versions of both DJ Hero and Tony Hawk: The Ride. The new Guitar Hero 5 bundle - comprised of a mic, drum kit, one guitar and the game itself - will sell for $200, a $10 increase over Guitar Hero World Tour's price point last year.

They also list a $80 collector's edition of Modern Warfare 2, although we don't yet know what that CE will include.

Uh, is it just me or does $120 sound like way too much for DJ Hero?

The Guitar Hero bundles with the guitar only cost $100, so yeah.

"Cmon! I know there's some left in there!"

I'm eager to see how DJ Hero turns out, make no mistake. But I do feel like they're all about ramming the musical-game genre down our throats until we puke cash for them.

Oh, and Tony Hawk...it's a great idea to revitalize a flagging franchise with a ridiculously overpriced accessory no one asked for. Again, maybe it's more fun than I give it credit for. But for $120, I highly doubt it.

I've always thought that the Guitar Hero and Rock Band games were overpriced for their cheap plastic instruments. I'd like to see what the markup is on them. I can't imagine those things cost much to make at all.

I can't wait until Activision chokes on its franchise and moves onto the next thing to exploit. I think the plastic-instrument music genre is bed-ridden and may croak in the coming years, thank goodness.

I see the music game genre as a precious natural resource; properly managed, it'll last for years, exploit it and you'll a load of cash short term, but soon things will run dry.

Just give me a single music game platform and add new stuff via DLC. Not just songs, but instruments, clothes, game features, tour modes. When a major overhaul is needed, release a new disc, but let everything be ported across and make sure the new disc is comparable in content to the old one. I love RB, but I was kinda disappointed in relatively small amount of new customisation stuff. Setting up your band is half the fun.

Supposedly EA takes a loss on each accessory (other than the mics). Activision actually manufactures them cheaper than EA does, and supposedly makes more of a profit off of the games.

That's...surprising. I wouldn't have guessed they'd cost much at all. Fisher Price makes some small kid guitars that feel more durable but all they make is sound and flashing lights.

Pretty soon we will all be playing air guitar and air drums. With Natal we will not need to purchase extra peripherals.

...Yeah right, like companies are going to give up that revenue stream.

I am boggled as to why the Rock Band folks haven't figured this one out. One of the only criticisms people had with RB2 compared to GHWT was the dearth of band/character customization. They've got all this great stuff like album covers, band t-shirts, etc, but they dropped the ball on really letting people go to town on making their band members unique.

They make a tidy sum off people buying new tracks. I'm certain that they would make a nice profit on DLC that featured new base characters, clothing, makeup, etc.

I'm really looking forward to DJ Hero so I may just spring for that extra $20, but I was thinking this would be in the $100 instrument+game range. But the other DJ game has yet to be priced, so maybe that will be a cheaper option.

Fisher Price has a huge, dedicated system for efficiently designing and manufacturing things like that. EA doesn't. They need to contract out to factories, set up supply chains, shipping, etc. Something that they've never had to do en masse before. The RB guitar is also a little more complicated than the GH one, which could account for some of that cost.

Would that even work with Natal? Can it distinguish such small finger movements and distinguish them accurately from multiple angles?

I have not idea. I was mostly being sarcastic because I'm not a fan of the Natal concept. At least not yet.

I think it can only do as precise as hand movements. Fingers are a no-no. It can possible do grabs, I'm not sure.

Welcome to Western Capitalism, where short-term profits trump long-term sustainability.

I'll be passing on every single one of these, thanks Activision!

Haha, that would be pretty rockin'!

I'd tell you to reserve that name for me, but I doubt I'll ever pick up the game. Just make sure they are cool.
