[E3 09] Scott's Day 2 Report (Disney) w/Video

We continue Scott's E3 09 2nd Day impressions with his stop at Disney, one he was eagerly anticipating to see Split/Second, the new game from Black Rock Studios who also did Pure. He also has video to go along with this report.

Here's a part of the report:

Quote:
To begin with, your HUD is positioned on the rear of the car. There you can see your position, lap, drift/air/draft distance along with score, and below that is your...well, I'm not sure they have a name for it yet, but it builds up in three separate blocks and provide you with "power plays".
Read the rest of the story here (w/videos).

From Scott (Psykoboy 2):

First the video of Split/Second:

To check out Spectrobes Origins video, check this thread.

Maybe WET got things started off on the right foot, because this day seemed the best for me out of all E3. That was also helped by the fact that right after WET I went to see Disney about Split/Second. You should probably go back and read my introduction to WET as to why I was excited and interested in this game. It really looks like Burnout from before Paradise City.

Split/Second isn't out until sometime in 2010, but Disney had no problem with me recording video (yet Modern Warfare 2 was behind lock and key?). There was VERY little information they could give me. No word on how many tracks, how many cars, online multiplayer, any of that stuff. This was all they had to show, but it was really fun. The videos I took will help with the explanation here a bit so make sure you check those out. Instead of earning power-ups to use against other drivers, you earn abilities to trigger environmental changes. We'll get to that in a minute.

To begin with, your HUD is positioned on the rear of the car. There you can see your position, lap, drift/air/draft distance along with score, and below that is your...well, I'm not sure they have a name for it yet, but it builds up in three separate blocks and provide you with "power plays". These are your environment controls. Two blue ones and a red one, it seems. Blues being smaller things like explosions and an obstacle here and there while the reds are used for massive changes to the track. You can see some idea of this in the videos I took. I got to play the game and while driving can take some getting used to with the handling of cars, it only took me about a lap to get things right with Split/Second. I can really only compare this game to Burnout...as it looks surprisingly like that game. Plays a bit that way too in that in order to build your power plays you have to do things like drift, draft, and get air. Same as you did with boost in Burnout.

Now, I can only go on the one track I was able to play and watch, but it seems they've got everything covered. I was wondering how all the big obstacles would matter lap after lap, but they make it happen. The first lap is usually the small stuff happening while the second lap will change the route, giving you something new to deal with. As I was playing on my second lap, I switched routes and then caused a massive explosion in the building I was driving through. Not having built up my power plays by the third lap, my route was the same, except I then had to maneuver through the mess I had made on the lap previous. Playing only one race, I can't really remark on the AI. I never did get very far ahead of the pack, so there could be some rubber banding going on there, or just my poor driving skills, I don't know.

In fact, none of us will know until sometime in 2010 when Disney will release Split/Second from Black Rock Studios to the 360 & PS3.

After that I still had some time with Disney and decided to check out Spectrobes Origins for the Wii. Watch the video for the details.

Nice, this looks like Race Driver: Grid on steroids w/ explosions and all. Nice work Disney, they've managed to pick a game one might actually consider picking up.
