[E3 09] Scott's Day 1 Report (Konami)

Scott ends his Day 1 reporting (Day 2 coming soon) with a trip to Konami. He didn't get to see any of the Metal Gear Solid games or Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (was announced yesterday). Heck, I'm not even sure anything but the MGS PSP game is on the floor, if even that. He did sit down with some unknown game since his guide dropped him off at it to tend to something else and the person explaining the game was already well into it.

He did get a chance to see Silent Hill: Shattered Dreams (Wii, PSP, PS2) and SAW: The Video Game (360, PS3, PC) though and found them both to not have much in the way of combat.

Here is part of his report:

You begin by filling out a psych exam. When asked about this I was told the game will "watch" you play. As though it's taking notes and changing things up ahead you'll be coming to based on your actions and decisions. For example, you come to a point in a building with a sign telling you that restrooms are to the left and the exit is to the right.

From Scott (Psykoboy2):

Once finished, it was off to Konami.

My time with them was back on the show floor again. It was another booth tour. Not that it mattered because once I arrived I had to wait about 10 minutes for someone to show up and go with me through the tour. Even then, she was getting called to find some other person who'd left the area. I was, once again, plopped in front of a game and told to wait there.

Unfortunately, I don't even remember the name of the game. The person talking about it was already well into discussion with a group already there from earlier. I just waited out my time.

After another good 10 minutes, I was finally taken over to see Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Wii, PSP, PS2) - a reimagining of the first Silent Hill. Now, this isn't an onscreen prompt - just a sign on a wall. You go where you want, but that decision to leave the restrooms alone or explore them will change what is about to happen just a little further in the game.

Keep in mind, this isn't about difficulty. There's no need for it. In fact, there's NO combat in this game at all, but more on that later. Back to the decisions. I'd said that the game didn't adjust difficulty based on your actions, and that's true...because it adjusts your future path based on your actions. Take a look into the restroom and further down the way a door might be open where it once would have been locked if you'd have taken the exit instead. I wasn't told in what other ways the game changes based on your actions, but it was driven in pretty hard that the game does indeed watch you play and what you do.

The game also seems to be going the easy route. That isn't really a bad thing. Puzzles are in the game, but a solution will always be near by. They really don't want that aspect to frustrate you, mainly because the lack of combat might. You cannot fight back. The best you can do is throw a monster off of you if it grabs you, but that's it. If there's monsters (and yeah, there are all crazy looking as is Silent Hill tradition), just run. Don't explore or wait....run. If you get hurt, you don't run as fast, so it's best to have a head start.

Having enough of Silent Hill, I took a look at SAW: The Video Game (360, PS3, PC). Oddly enough another game with very little to no combat in it. Speaking with one of the guys working on the game, he told me the game's focus is on the puzzles and the story. The story, in relation to the films, takes place.....

And we were interrupted by LACC staff telling us to pull the plug. It was closing time and they had to close NOW. If there's more interest in SAW from the CoG community, let me know and I can work my way over there and finish up.

End Of Day One.
