[E3 09] Final Fantasy XIV Q & A

Square Enix announced that they would be holding a press conference, but ended up holding a Q & A session about only one game: Final Fantasy XIV. The highlights of the answers:

- The MMO will launch worldwide on the PS3 and PC in 2010. They said they'd be open to bringing the game to "other platforms" (ie: The Xbox), but no decisions have been made about it either way.

- They hope the servers for the game will be both cross-platform, and cross-region. They'll test it out during an as-of-yet unscheduled beta period. No word on if it will be public, private or invite-only.

- They will continue to support Final Fantasy XI for the foreseeable future.

- While the races you'll play as in XIV will be different than the ones in XI, they'll be similar enough that they will seem familiar. So even though that little guy isn't a Tarutaru, you can guess how he plays by his look.

- They won't talk about the battle system yet, but they promise that there will be plenty of solo content for the game right out of the gate.

- There will be a job system in the game, but they won't go into details about it now. They simply call it "expanded and modified."

- It won't crossover or interact with FF XI in any way. Square had considered porting XI over to the PS3, but it would have been almost as much work as making a new MMO.

- It will not use PlayOnline, but you will be able to transfer your friends list over in some fashion.

- No pricing was discussed at this time.

And with that the Q&A ended. Expect more on the game in the coming months.

Right, like they haven't already made a 20 issue manga and an anime short based around that idea. Always remember, Japan is like the rule 34 of countries.

I dunno... they may have already been too busy with the Mithra to think about the Chocobo...

I'm actually surprised by this news. I doubt that I'll play the game unless it is a significant departure from XI, but I'm sure there are many who will enjoy it.

A single server, multi-region system is what all MMO's should strive for. I only know of one MMO that actually has that though, EVE Online.

Admittedly, even on a supercluster you can't get WoW levels of people without either a massively expensive system or a fragile system. That said, there is absolutely no excuse for region-locking a MMO. It's a fucking multiplayer game, don't cut the fanbase up.

Is seems likely that servers will be cross-region, cross-platform. They said that's what they're trying for and that's what XI had.

The World Pass system was in place when XI launched (I forget when they got rid of it) - newly created characters were assigned to servers randomly, unless they entered a World Pass code for a specific server. Someone who was already in-game had to buy a World Pass code from an NPC with in-game currency.

Later on, they just allowed users to select their desired server when they created a new character.

This was probably because they wanted to try balance the servers, but it sucked because it created hurdles for people trying to get on the same servers as their friends. And at the time, you couldn't even transfer a character between servers (which you can now do, for a fee).

Hopefully XIV doesn't have anything similar. I think they heard plenty of complaints about world passes the first time around.

I hope this does get announced for 360. I'd love to play, but my PC wouldn't be up to it; especially once it's released.

They just need a better way of balancing the servers, though World Passes weren't a bad idea. Just get one of us on and we get a world pass to give to the others. It prevented everyone from starting on Bahamut because they thought the name sounded cool.
