Final Fantasy VII hitting the PSN

Perhaps being overshadowed by the announcement of FFXIV for the PS3, Sony announced that Final Fantasy VII will be available for purchase on the PSN today. FFVII appears to be just the first of many PSOne classics headed to market. More than 50 have been promised already.

It's good to see Sony really getting behind electronic distribution.

I'm so excited for this. I loved FFVII, but I'm somewhat afraid that it won't compare favorably to my memory of how awesome it was. At $10 it will be an instant buy. Anything else, I'll have to contemplate.

I just looked for it a few minutes ago and it's not up yet. I'll buy if it's the standard $5.99 but I have a feeling it will be $14.99ish

About time. I didn't finish FFVII so this is my chance to go back and retry. I'm not sure how well this game aged though since when I tried playing it, it looked aged then (about 3 yrs ago). Still, I want to play it because it's such a "classic".

I tried playing FFVII again a few years ago. It wasn't pretty. I remember getting super frustrated about all sorts of stuff, like how slow Cloud climbed up ladders and how the graphics really didn't hold up.

Great game, but been there, done that.

Wonder if this will affect the ebay price for the PSX version, it's still going for $50+.

I don't think I could bring myself to sell mine though, heh.

I've been predicting $14.99, but we'll see.

Also, $50 on eBay now? Wow. I paid $20 for my (black label!) copy, but that was many years ago...

I hope they add analog controls. That's the worst part of replaying FFVII...

I'm pretty sure that you can map the d-pad to the left stick. On the PSP, at least, this is true.

It hasn't aged well. It's crude and simple, the graphics are (like most late 90's games) disjointed and weird and the menu is sub-par. It's Goldeneye Syndrome in its most typical form.

But as a positive, it hasn't aged nearly as badly as FFVIII, which looks so bad I literally got 18 minutes (according to the save) into it before giving up because I couldn't stand looking at the game. I'm the type of gamer that bad graphics don't tend to bother me either.

I'm kind of excited about this one. I never had a PS1, so I never got to play it. Cool stuff.

I have to agree with CES.
FF7, FF8, Parasite Eve
Simply haven't aged well as far as graphics go.

I don't know. I think in terms of being a portable PSP game they should do just fine. Still crude but not that bad. I played Tobal and Bushido Blade on there recently and I think they look just fine.

You create a virtual memory card in the XMB. It's pretty nice.

It's not all late 90's games that look bad. The thing to keep in mind is the styles used. FF7 uses a blocky 3d character on pre-rendered backgrounds. It allowed for some pretty great looking backgrounds but the characters (with no faces, just giant eyes) don't look like they belong there in the least. It's extremely jarring while playing. They also use those same blocky 3d characters during some of the pre-rendered scenes.

Tobal and Bushido Blade were never the prettiest games either. I think the PSP and lower quality graphics work well together.
