[E3 09] Final Fantasy XIV Announced as an MMORPG

One of the blockbusters to come out of Sony's presser today was the announcement of Final Fantasy XIV. This MMO will be coming to the PS3 and PC sometime in 2010, with a simultaneous worldwide launch.

What do we know about the game? Not much at the moment, other than the staff:
Quote:
Producer Hiromichi Tanaka (FINAL FANTASY I, II, III, XI)
Director: Nobuaki Komoto (FINAL FANTASY IX, XI)
Art Director: Akihiko Yoshida (Vagrant Story®, FINAL FANTASY XII)
Music: Nobuo Uematsu of SMILE PLEASE (FINAL FANTASY series)
But from the trailer the world of Eorzea looks to be a bit more medieval/renaissance based than the recent far future type games. They had to have been working on this one for quite a while to even conceive of a 2010 release, but no gameplay footage was shown.

The art style is very much like FFXI, which is a great thing, as I love that art. I'll be on day one.

I watched the trailer again, searching for a Tarutaru or something similar.
I did not find one.

I can be nothing else. Square Enix, do not let me down.

Why do they give the MMO's main series numbers? They should have called FFXI "FF Online" & this should be Online 2 or something like that. It's confusing and unnecessary.

Confusing and unnecessary from Square Enix?

Never.

Just because it's online doesn't mean it isn't a part of the series. FFXI has just as much story and atmosphere to offer as any other installment in the franchise, and I imagine FFXIV will offer just as much, if not more.

I am excited and worried at the same time. I loved FFXI until about lvl 40, it jsut became tedious. It will be hard but I will more than likely skip it if its the same team as XI.

I'm sure they have learned a lot from FFXI. Or maybe they haven't, I don't know.

Anyway, the video won't load for me. Will try again later.

Eorzea doesn't exactly roll off the tongue like Vana'diel, but I'm certainly down for trying it.

Each Final Fantasy has a new story anyways. The only one with a direct sequel is FFX. I still think the MMORPG's should be called something else but they didn't ask me

It's hard for me to be excited. The market is glutted with a fuckton of MMORPGs who are at times so much alike in both gameplay and art style (oh, goodie...another MMO in which you kill rats in a cave). I won't diss the art-style or production values on this one...it is Square-Enix after all. But I'm sick and tired of every goddamn company and their grandmothers putting out MMO after MMO.

I'll be excited IF this one does something new and fresh with the genre. Or if it is free. Sorry, but monthly payments is a guaranteed deal breaker for me. I'm not shitting on this piece of news mind you, but ever since WoW came out and held the MMO field in a deathgrip, we've seen no end to the MMO diarrhea since, and very few have even tried to do anything remotely new or innovative. And the ones that did (like Tabula Rasa...yea, that game had flaws but at least it tried to do some new things) failed miserably.

Like there was any doubt.

Maybe they will have an early beta and you will get lucky with an invite. I hope so.

The pic on the official website shows Tarutaru, Elvaan, Hume, Mithra and what looks like Galka. Even if it is really similar to XI I'll be playing on day 1.

Not only that, but MMOs have come a long way in the last five years.

I think it's a slight kick in the teeth for the admittedly small number of loyal 360 players (of FFXI). There's no reason for this to be exclusive unless money changed hands.

shouldn't Square release the Fabula Nervosa Crystalis or whatever before they start on the next one?

It will also be shit, as XI was a grindfest with a horrible user interface and ungodly amounts of tedium.

There's no guarantee that it'll do something dramatically "fresh and new," but FFXI has been around for quite a while now, and has changed quite a bit over the years. I'm sure they're doing more with the game than FFXI with shiny new graphics.

And it will most definitely have a monthly fee.
