[E3 09] New Mario, Metroid Games Announced

We'll have our recap of the Nintendo presser up shortly, but there were a trio of announcements we should highlight.

First announced was New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii is a throwback to the classic Mario 2D platformers, but with a twist: 4 player Co-Op. This is set for release this holiday season.

Next up was Super Mario Galaxy 2. This looks almost identical to the original SMG, but with some new items, environments and the addition of Yoshi. 2010 release for this one.

Lastly was the new, Team Ninja-developed Metroid: Other M. The game looks to be a return to the series' 2D roots, but with a detailed story added to the mix. Metroid: Other M is scheduled for a 2010 release.

We'll bring you more on these games - details, screens and videos - as we get them in.

Other than God of War III, the new Metroid is now my most anticipated game.

I was really disappointed with Nintendo's showing. No mention of Sin and Punishment 2 or No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle, to start off, bothered me. Then we get to the games they talked about, which looked pretty shit, including Cop: New Recruit, Another Resident Evil Rail Shooter, Dead Space: Extraction, and Golden Sun DS, which features the most creative name ever seen in a game. I should like that Metroid game, but Team Ninja was a bad studio even when Itagaki-san was there to crack the whip. Also, the name is garbage. Then we get to Super Mario Galaxy 2, which I should really like. The thing is, however, that I still have power stars to collect in the original Super Mario Galaxy, and I didn't see anything in that trailer that raises part two over part one. "New" Super Mario Bros. Wii is a complete joke. There is nothing about that game that interests me, and I'd prefer it if it wasn't announced.

It's a mix of 1st and 3rd person. So not 2D.

It looked somewhat side scrolling until you went behind Samus...it is certainly 3D and on the Wii.

Very excited about the story potential in the new Metroid, would love some more info of what happens after Fusion. Was that mysterious "remember me?" guy Adam?

Oh gawd, I hope not. Fusion is my least favorite Metroid because Adam had to blab to you every time you entered an area.

Is NSMB Wii primarily co-op? Or will it have a worthwhile single player? (Or do we not know that much about it yet?)

Nintendo's put out a couple of games with really unique multiplayer dynamics where you have to work cooperatively to complete a level, but everyone is scored individually by points, so you end up backstabbing everyone else to stay ahead, but not to the point where it makes the entire team lose.

That's exactly how Zelda: Four Swords Adventure, probably my favorite co-op game of all time, worked on the Gamecube. The game would flip between co-op and competitive every couple of seconds.

NSMB for Wii looks like it's incorporating the same philosophy, minus the crazy hardware requirements that hindered people from playing Four Swords. Unfortunately, I'm sure it won't be online, and it's going to be hard for me to get four people together for long enough to give this some serious play time, which kills me because if this is anything like Four Swords, it's going to be amazing.

Metroid worries me, but then I said Metroid in 3D could never work back in the day so... I know to keep my mouth shut this time.

Just hope they get Ms Hale back, never get enough of her...

They need to re-release Four Swords, maybe on DS.

Four Swords is good times, good times. I always loved fighting hundreds of foot soldiers. And I remember at the end where we'd always run around trying to pick each other up. And the voting mechanic was always awesome.

One of the benefits to working at a videogame company for several years is that it was actually possible to get the setup needed to play Four Swords numerous times, for both GBA and Gamecube. We also played lots of the original Crystal Chronicles, too. It was a feat few pulled off, I'll bet.

I was in a college dorm when it came out, so I got to play both. As I said, Four Swords was absolutely fantastic, Crystal Chronicles not so much.

Just watched it again, the dude in uniform at the start says "any objections lady?", so that's definitely Adam, but not the other guy.

Man this looks badass, looks like you may fight some of the Hunters too.

EDIT: Not a hunter just a traditional purple space pirate.

There seems to be 3 completely different looking blonde ladies, one is definitely Samus as she's in her blue zero suit, one has short hair but I think that's who Adam is addressing, I guess that's young/in training Samus, third one in the lab coat looks different again but you hear "I am Samus Aran" while looking at her. Confusing.

Seems to span a fair time period though.

Pretty sure I saw Mother Brain's final form from Super Metroid in that video... I'm intrigued...
