[E3 09] Xbox Live Games on Demand Announced

Full-fledged Xbox 360 titles will be available for download over Xbox Live, starting with about 30 titles available in August and more added each week.

IGN - MS Luncheon Live Blog

Quote:
(12:42:11 PM): Mass Effect, BioShock, Assassin's Creed 2, Sonic, Crackdown, Oblivion, Civ Rev are the ones on display. Can buy these with a direct credit card purchase instead of points.

(12:41:07 PM): The first thing is Games on Demand. Announcing full retail games on demand for download. Launching in August with about 30 titles, more coming every week after.
A pretty big move for digital distribution on the 360.

They'll gladly sell you a shiny new 120GB hard drive.

Also in that meeting, they mentioned they aren't announcing a new, larger hard drive, but I guess that doesn't mean there won't be one, at some point.

(1:04:28 PM): Games on Demand will be worldwide.

(1:01:48 PM): Now a question is being asked about whether the Games on Demand is a step towards competing with OnLive game streaming. The answer is that Whitten thinks the digital distribution will come in multiple ways.

(12:53:19 PM): The first question is about the Games on Demand. Pricing will be similar to retail, no word on when games will come day and date with retail.

On my mostly full 20gig or the extremely overpriced 120gig (which would fill quickly with this feature)?

And why did they not announce this during the actual presser instead of at a smaller luncheon? They could have cut down on the camera thingy a little bit, they could have covered this.

MS is just doing what they need to; adapt or get the fuck out of the way. They chose to adapt.

Edit: Also most 360 games are 6 GB. I have about seven of them installed, and a bunch of DLC on my HDD, I still have 66GB left.

Maybe because it's not as flashy as talking about new games & new tech? "Hey, you can buy Bioshock over Xbox Live!" "Great, we... bought Bioshock two years ago. What's next?"

I don't expect that I'll use the service regularly, but I think it's nice to have it there as an option. I could potentially see myself buying a budget title digitally, like the Steam deals, if those were to ever happen.

I guess you won't be using it then? I have a 60GB, so it has plenty of room for a few games.

I'm curious if Microsoft is seeing a larger number of 360 users with larger than the 20GB. I would assume so since they moved forward with the service. I'm pretty much cut out on this right away unless I plan to buy a larger hard drive. I don't.

Look, you can't be upset about the digital distribution trend leaving you in the dust when you're still grasping on to a fucking 20GB HDD. I mean, I just bought a 1TB external FireWire drive for $178.00.

Either upgrade to a drive with more space or accept the fact that you are no longer standing in the space where new technology is aimed. This revelation doesn't have to be a negative...it only is if you expect the new tech to work on your small, outdated storage devices.

So...Can we safely assume that these games will transfer seamlessly to the next iteration of the XBox?

Microsoft isn't going to let you use an external HDD for this. That 1TB for $178? Microsoft is charging that much for 120GB. People want to upgrade but they'd prefer not to be horribly raped over pricing.

Well, find me an Xbox HDD that's 1TB for $178 and I'll say you have a point.

I'm not upset. I've already made it known that I am not in favor of an all digital distribution method for delivery of full games. I like DD as a compliment to disk based media.

What I was wondering is if Microsoft had data to show that the majority of 360 users had 120GB hard drives. I wasn't being an ass, I was jsut curious to the ratio of 20GB vs 120GB users on the 360. Oh! Good luck on buying a 1TB external firewire drive for your 360, especially for $178.00.

I'm not grasping on a fucking 20GB HDD, I'm grasping on a fucking 20GB HDD that's propriety and my only other option for upgrading is getting a 120GB HDD that costs well over that of any normal HDD.

Hey, I understand the pricing is an issue worth noting. I understand that it's overpriced and that it's the only option. But so do you. My point is that there really isn't anything you can do about it other than upgrade to a new HDD at their set price. That's the cost of admission to the DD party they're promoting. You want to go to that party? Guess what you have to do?

Otherwise, you can still buy the $60 physical media and enjoy it like everyone else. Myself included.
