Warner Bros Make $33M Bid for Midway's Assets

Man, those Warner Bros. really want into the gaming biz in a bad way. Today the upstart publisher placed a $33 million bid for the assets of defunct publisher and developer Midway.

While the crown jewel in Midway's vault is the Mortal Kombat franchise, the company also owns such properties as Area 51, Ready 2 Rumble and Gauntlet. Warner Games has also begun to take back high profile licenses - such as Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter - to try and develop the games internally. Towards that end, the studio has spent the last few years acquiring developers such as TT Games, Monolith and Snowblind. Adding Midway to the list would go a long way towards their goal of being a major player on the gaming scene.

Too much. They should go look in Big Huge Games. Any word on their fate yet?

I, for one, would like to see more video game movie tie-ins that are cheaply produced and lacking in difficulty/fun.

Midway assets are worth $33 million? I want to know who evaluate those assets. Come over to my attic and value some of my assets so I can rip someone off too...

At least some of that is in real estate; Midway owned/owns offices in both Chicago and Austin.

But as for their IPs, forgetting all the other stuff, Mortal Kombat is a big deal. 3 films, 2 TV shows, and dumptrucks of other stuff add up. It's also one of the really recognizable properties out there. In other words, it's perfect for a relative newcomer like WB: it provides instant name recognition.
