Time to get Serious Again

Some games try to bring you intricate, multi-layered narratives. Others try to force the player to confront serious ethical and philosophical questions.

Serious Sam is not one of those games. The game is about mowing down wave after wave of over-the-top monsters, with an occasional side of 'blowin' crap up'. There is no nuance, there is no storytelling, there's just a man, a big ^#%*ing gun, and a wall of monsters to obliterate. And it's coming back.

In a message on Croteam's website, CEO Roman Ribaric reaffirms the team's work on the Serious Engine 3. That engine will be used in at least two internally developed games: an unnamed new property, and Serious Sam 3 (they had been working on a military action game for Gamecock, but that deal fell through and Croteam is no longer involved with Gamecock). Well let you know when more info on Serious Sam 3 or the unknown title become available.

Sources - Croteam; Co-Optimus.

I seem to remember hearing that the console sequels kind of crapped it up, but I was a huge fan of the old Serious Sam games on the PC, so I'm hoping it's more of that. Because I would totally buy that day effin' one.

I played both episodes of the first, and they were great fun. I usually hate first person shooters, but Serious Sam just boils them down to what makes them fun and throws ten times as much of it at you as anything else, and so help me, it works.

Loved Serious Sam. Lan Co-Op on the hardest difficulty was hilarious.

Cool. I really enjoyed both of Croteam's Serious Sam offerings. No apologies, balls out FPS action with gigantic bosses and cool weapons.

Amen to that. Years ago we played one of the Serious Sam games at a LAN party. Probably eight players and so many enemies it was unbelievable.

Awesome. Serious Sam is so deliciously over the top with hundreds of enemies swarming at you, along with gigantic bosses towering over you. Can't wait for a third game in the set!

Only Painkiller came close to matching this level of over-the-top-ishness.

I could replace "Serious Sam" with "Call of Duty" or "Guitar Hero" and I don't think it'd be any less accurate. I think a bit of stupid fun every so often is perfectly fine; there aren't enough FPSes like Serious Sam out there for anyone to be really fatigued on them.

It's funny, too, I just posted on the IGC forum yesterday that I'd very much like to see another Serious Sam, after they talked about it on a recent episode. It's like Croteam was watching me...

I guess since you don't like this type of game, maybe we can talk the developers into cancelling it. Sorry, we forgot to get your approval.

I just said what I thought about it. No need to get your panties in a bunch.

Yes, now that I think about it, that statement is clearly applicable to Guitar Hero.

EDIT:

Was there anything wrong with the old games? What can they actually improve, besides graphics. I never played any MP, was it any good? Was there even an MP?. I need to play those games now.

Yes, there was MP, and it was fun for what it was.

Another thing to remember about these games is that they were cheap. I'm pretty sure they retailed for ~$30 when they were new. Yeah, it wasn't a deep experience, but it was great value.

Muddi, but couldn't that be said of just about any sequel? What is another Call of Duty going to give us but better graphics, new levels, new weapons, etc.? This is the type of game where you blow up wave after wave of enemies. There are types of games where you sneak around, avoiding detection. There are open world games. There are rhythm games. When you boil games down to their essence there's really no need for further games other than the fact that they're fun.

The MP was made for lan play. We'd have 4 guys playing co-op in my basement. They increased the enemy amount according to how many people were in the game (ala Diablo) so you would have just massive waves coming at you and your buddies in this massive outdoor arena. God that was a great MP experience. The bomb guys screaming at you and your boys constantly.

"Shoot that motherfucking screamer!"
"There are like 30 fucking screamers over here."
Turn around.

"Oh fuck..."

Everyone dies. Good times indeed. Can't wait for a rehash.
