Valkyria Chronicles Demo Now Available on PSN

SEGA just announced that a demo for Valkyria Chronicles is now available for download on PlayStation Network, featuring two playable levels.

In 1930s Europa, tensions rise to an all-time high between the continent’s two distinct military powers – the Empire and the Federation. In the struggle for ultimate supremacy, the Second Europa War (E.W.II) erupts, and Gallia, the small independent nation situated between the two super powers, now faces attack.

The Empire's Imperial Army is first to strike Gallia, forcing the young lieutenant Welkin Gunther to pull back his small platoon. As the invading forces charge toward the capital city, Welkin discovers that not only are they outmatched in scale and weaponry, but the enemy army also has Valkyria, an unusually powerful race, in their ranks. As the war rages, the capital city is about to fall to the enemy, but Welkin’s unique battle strategies bring hope to his homeland…

There may be a chance for Gallia after all. This is Welkin’s story.

The game will see a PAL release on October 31st, 2008.

Well, I know I won't be playing the LBP demo, so this will have to do.

Played it, it's great. This is bundled with Qore in the US today, so just download it from the EU store and you're good to go.

The videos of this on the 1up show got me interested, I'll have to try this out this weekend between WAR and the LBP beta.

So, wait. Is the demo just on the EU store? OP isn't clear on that. Also, genre?

It's on the EU store, will be available in the US today, but only through Qore. It's a strategy RPG.

Well crap... I know it's not expensive, but I don't want to pay for Qore. Guess this weekend will be all Disgaea 3 and Soul Calibur 4 again. No demos.

Or you can just download it from the EU PSN. It's not region locked.

How does one go about that? I'm not familiar with how to toggle between regions or set up accounts for Europe, Japan, etc. and I'm interested in the game enough to want to see how the demo handles.

That's good to hear.

Now the quandary... Do I download the demo so I can try the game I've been looking forward to the most this fall OR do I skip the demo so the entire game is fresh and new and exciting when it finally hits next month?

Wow, that was a very short demo. Hard to decide if I like the game or not based on that. And to be honest, I didn't look as good as I thought it would.

I love how they are charging for this in one region and giving it away in another. How silly.

In the US you can only download it if you pay for Qore. In the UK, it's totally free.

Ah, I see. Phew...

Still sucks donkey balls, though, for those who want to try it but are unwilling to Qore it.

Maybe the Qore users just get it a week early, kind of like the Naruto Ultimate Nnja Storm demo.

Well, I'm not gonna spend a dime on a demo, so I'll have to wait. I've got a lot to do between now and when they release the demo in the good old US of A for free.

If they don't get a demo to me before the game ships, that's their problem... not mine. There are LOTS of other things to buy this fall.

On the far left hand side of the XMB go to the top option and create a new profile. Simply set your country for the region you want and Google and address to use and that's pretty much it. Very simple. Personally, I have one for Hong Kong, Japan, and the UK.

I'm no fan of holding demos from users - seems against marketing 101, but you can blame Microsoft for starting the trend by holding demos back from silver users.

Which is also a stupid move... but one that has a distinct advantage over the Qore approach.

On Live, a Silver user can browse everything. They can still see the titles of things, and a little lock next to it. This transparency works to make people WANT to upgrade their account. It is not unlike putting things people can buy in a store window, would-be customers can see it, know it is behind the glass, and are more likely to buy it.

The Qore approach puts the products inside something you can't see inside of. If not for this news article, lots of us would never even know the demo was available.

Both methods of charging users for demos are stupid, but they are not equally stupid.
