Oh I think it works for many, but just not all. I think a wider sample would have shown that. There are so many body types out there that no one thing is a magic button to fix it. That article seemed to imply differently, at least that is how it read in my mind. But I was annoyed with the very small sample size.

It is great that it works for you and obviously others though.

That is sort of where I have been the whole time. I am a big guy and I carried my weight well, but I was not huge. Being 6'4" and around 255 lbs I was hope the weight would just drop. Instead it has slowly burned away for the past few months. I am around 240 lbs now, but damn if my shorts nearly fall off me and that is with my belt as tight as it will go. Shirts fit better. I feel better. There are still areas where I need to work on it. Still some portion control issues, but mostly centered around dinner. I need to drink more water, apparently I am very bad about that. I am also toning nicely as well.

tl;dr - It may not come off dramatically, but over time you will notice the difference.

Yeah, when I complain about my weight I get people saying "you're not fat", but I'm not comfortable with my shirt off. I'll go swimming, but for once it would be nice to take off my shirt and notice someone noticing.

Of course, I have gone the opposite way with my girlfriend's pregnancy. I don't want to make her feel bad, so I put on 10 pounds so we could belly bump.

And here is a different article on the same experiment, but positioned in a far better way.
Quote:
Almost every diet, from the radical no-carb-at-all notions to the tame (and sane) “Healthy Eating Plate” from Harvard, agrees on at least this notion: reduce, or even come close to eliminating, the amount of hyper-processed carbohydrates in your diet, because, quite simply, they’re bad for you. And if you look at statistics, at least a quarter of our calories come from added sugars (seven percent from beverages alone), white flour, white rice, white pasta … are you seeing a pattern here? (Oh, and white potatoes. And beer.)

So what’s Ludwig’s overall advice? “It’s time to reacquaint ourselves with minimally processed carbs. If you take three servings of refined carbohydrates and substitute one of fruit, one of beans and one of nuts, you could eliminate 50 percent of diet-related disease in the United States. These relatively modest changes can provide great benefit.”

The message is pretty simple: unprocessed foods give you a better chance of idealizing your weight — and your health. Because all calories are not created equal.

Amen to that. Keto/IF has been working really well for me--I've been consistently dropping 2.5 pounds/week for the past six weeks, which is way more and with more regularity than anything else I've tried.

I had been giving myself a break from exercise as I spun up on keto. I was going to start back up this week, but unfortunately two different co-workers are leaving, and the several social events we've had to see them off have involved the few restaurants in Austin without good low-carb menus. I've basically had to declare an entire "cheat week" just so I can spend the evening with my departing friends.

Ah well, I'll be back on the boat tomorrow morning. Thankfully, I haven't gained weight at all this week (well, about a pound, but that's almost certainly water weight).

You had a cheat week and you only gained a pound? You did well. Beyond well. This will help you more than you think down the road. But great for you that you controlled your cheating with only gaining a pound. That is a hard feat for many people to do (like myself )

I have been in the gym religiously for the last few months. After I moved I found a gym that was walking distance from our house. After the adjustment, i'm now back doing morning and evening cardio sessions. Back to two a days. I really missed going to the gym twice a day. I even have ADDGirl going twice a day. Exercise is catchy

It takes a far better looks at the data and delves deeper in the issue. It also fails to mention the sample size, which is annoying. Honestly, it just came across better for me.

Yea, I knew it was hard to explain. Maybe I just disliked the writing or how the info was presented in the first article. I also like Bittman so the NYT version would be better anyway. Sorry for the confusion!

Working out seems to be helping my drinking habit. At night, I'm too sore to get off the couch and go drinking

I think Bittman can be a bit to much at times, but I do enjoy reading what he writes about. I think he's a bit preachy and this is someone who is in that choir preaching much of the time

Have you tried any of his cookbooks? Ironically enough, he has an amazing vegetarian cookbook...How to cook everything vegetarian. You might be able to find it in the library and check out some of the recipes.

One of the benefits to working out I have found is how much better I feel mentally. I know physically i'm doing good for my body but I don't feel the same mentally if I don't go to the gym. Keep up the good work. I think you will see the difference both mentally and physically.

I have a few of his books, and yea he can be preachy. I do enjoy his writing style though. He also approaches subjects in a good way

I'm back on the weight loss/get healthy wagon. I've been pretty consistently between 201-205 for most of the summer. So I decided to kick start things with a detox and see what happens. I really don't eat BAD, but I just need to get more veggies in my diet I think.

Anyway here's what I'm doing to detox - I'm on the last day:
Apple Juice and an Orange for Breakfast
Head of Broccoli steam with garlic and olive oil for lunch
Blueberry and Acai Smoothie for dinner (blueberries, acai juice, ice)
Gallon of Water a day

I'm down about 6 or 7 pounds right now from when I started 2 days ago. Other than the massive headache yesterday from lack of caffeine, things are going alright. Trying to get back to playing soccer twice a week instead of just once and I'll do the eliptical on the off days.

When did you start the detox? I guess I am asking how long do you do the detox if I were to give that a go?

I wanted to do it for 4 days, but I think I'm only gonna last 3. I've seen a few detox plans that only last 2 days (my wife just did that one) - but this one is sort of a hodge podge of what I was reading would be good to have to clean out your system and still keep your functional.

The biggest reason I did it was to kick the caffeine thing.

Why did you want to kick the caffeine thing? There is new research that states consuming large amounts of caffeine does not harm your health that was once believed. I'll have to find it if I can remember where I read it.

For the Fourth, I did a race with the girlfriend where she beat me handily. I ran the mile in just under 8 minutes. Which is great considering I was doing over 12 minutes just three months ago. I could have pushed harder. Have to see how the next 5k goes.

Eh - I just didn't like the dependence on it. Needed to get it back down to 1 to 2 cups of something a day instead of 6.

This is relevant I think for many of us:

Fast food workers of Reddit, what is the one menu option at your employment that you would recommend people never eat? (Because of cooking safety, cleanliness, unhealthy, etc)
