"Like Final Crisis, But on Crack"

I was going to save this for "In Other News...", but it's too good to squander. Grant Morrison talks to Wizard about his new multiverse-centric project from DC. The Weekly Crisis has the rundown of "Multiversity" (may not be the final name)
Quote:
I've started a series called The Multiversity, which will pick up a bunch of strands from 52 and Final Crisis. Back when we laid out the return of the Multiverse in 52, I asked if I could establish some of these books as potential ongoing series. We wanted to set up each universe as its own franchise. [...]

So this is my big project for the next year, and I'm working on books for seven different parallel universes. Each one is a first issue with a complete story and series bible. Each one spotlights the major superhero group of a different alternate reality. And they all link together together as a seven-issue story that reimagines the relationship between the DCU and the Multiverse.
Only two of the seven worlds are explicitly named in the interview. Earth-5, home of the Shazam family, which will be done "in a more traditional, all-ages, All-Star Superman style." And Earth-4, home of the Charlton heroes, and Morrison's take on Watchmen.
Quote:
I thought it would be interesting to pick up on that sort of crystalline, self-reflecting storytelling method, so the mad notion I came up with was to do the Charlton characters in a story I'd construct as an update on that ludic Watchmen style - if Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons had pitched the Watchmen now, rooted in a contemporary political landscape but with the actual Charlton characters instead of analogues!
I can guess at least three of the other worlds. The Crime Syndicate (Earth-3) is one of Morrison's faves. And he couldn't stop raving about his "pulp heroes" earth, which may or may not have a designation. I'll also assume that Earth-51, where the New Gods, the OMACs, Kamandi and the rest of the Kirby creations ended up, will also be featured.

The line "Like Final Crisis, but on crack" is coined by Kirk over at TWC, and does not seem to come from Morrison, but it's the perfect way to describe this book. I'm intrigued, but not enough to actually buy a copy of Wizard.

This kind of story is why I just sold all my loose comic books and stopped buying them. Inane crossover stories that require that many purchases are a big turnoff for me. I don't want to read about parallel universes and crap, I want a good Batman story.

You know, that was my exact thought when I saw the thread title. Maybe it's because I only started reading some DC stuff just before Final Crisis but it seemed to jumble everything up for no real reason. Can't complain about them branching it into other series' though since Civil War did the same (except I actually liked Civil War)

It was on crack. Which means multiversity will be a order of magnitude more fucked up.

BTW, I have a feeling this will be a lot more coherent than FC. Partly because expectations will be lower, partly because Morrison doesn't have to even pretend that he's working with characters other writers/editors are responsible for.

Seconded. Huge multiple title crossovers are exaclty the way to alienate people, not keep them. I wish Marvel and DC would figure this out.

Grant Morrison needs to be capped. I mean like in the scope of the shit he can do. Basically deny anything he does that included multiple. No more multiple Supermen, universes, same characters. No.

The same reason they keep giving this drunk more work in continuity. He's a name and his books sell.

You shut your face! Warren Ellis is the greatest. Come to think of it, isn't a new Fell coming out?

Warren Ellis is beyond awesome. But I've never seen any of his interviews without a mention of Jack Daniels. And you've to be really fucking drunk to write Nextwave and Transmetropolitan.

New Planetary is coming out, but a recent Templesmith interview I saw said that he hasn't seen a script of Fell for a while. I doubt we will ever see it. It's the only book that can be followed by anyone in issues and they never come out.

Ellis is also the Internet Jesus. Plus he doesn't get much in continuity work compared to his output (Nextwave wasn't supposed to be, but was so damn good it ended up being shoehorned in).

Also of note, Morrison manages to even frighten Ellis.

Still doesn't matter. Their book sells. There are a lot of people who have a similar reaction to Ellis' work, because he mostly phones in his superhero work. But he gets work because his detractors are outnumbered by his fans. Again your problem is you give a fuck about continuity. Just don't give a fuck and it becomes awesome.

EDIT: I did not know Nextwave was canon now. Still not his best work though.

Nextwave is the greatest thing humanity has ever produced, ever.

The funny thing is I just started Crisis on Infinite Earths to help me solidify the DC universe so I could start exploring it more readily. Fuck you DC!

To get into DC I suggest reading Scans Daily, well, daily. Through them, slowly but surely you'll be able to get to grips with the DCU.

Old SD would of been perfect as it had a treasure trove of information but thanks to certain asshole writers we aren't allowed have nice things.
