Need a Laugh: Karak's Advice on How Not to Choose a New Hobby.

So.
I decided a few weeks ago that I wanted another outlet. Or hobby. I decided fuck, lets try RC planes.
So I begin investigating and find a couple I like.
So I find this one.

http://www.nitroplanes.com/new204chathi.html
I think it makes perfect sense. Its an A-10. The most militant and burly beast to ever fly.
What could POSSIBLY go wrong.

Lets start with gravity and go from there?

My original Flight of the Valkrie was perhaps 3.2 seconds. As the A-10 soared not at all and instead shot directly earthward pushed by the full throttle I was giving it(hand launching...long story)
The A-10 exploded into history.
It was like having your pecker snapped.
A moment of wonder ending in horrible gut wrenching pain.

So a couple days ago I decided to try my luck with something a bit more novice.
This also has more umph supplied by a lipo battery and brushless engines.

http://www.hobby-lobby.com/jetiger_e...21679_prd1.htm

Easy to fly, check, all parts already installed, check.
What could go wrong.

Today, sunny and warm and with girlfriend and one of three dogs in tow I decide to go and fly the plane.
It's a bit windy but workable.
All items check out ok.
I hook up the lipo battery give it a ramp up.
And away she goes.
Totally vertical with insane speed.
This is fucking awesome it's just tearing into the sky- BOOM!
She explodes. I mean, heat seeking missile, videogame style explosion.
Boom.
The air is filled with yellow bits that the soccor kids now have to dodge.
I look to my girlfriend.
She looks at me.
The only thing I can do is utter the words running through my head.
"Holy shit!"
And I start laughing as my dog begins to attack the burning bits.
He brings to me a still smoldering wing bit.

Good times.
Sleep well cog.
At least most of your hobbies did not go down in fiery bits today

EDIT:
So I bought another one today
A bit more of a trainer even through its got the little minefield like Lipo battery.

Woah. That's sick. Where do you fly? I see people down by Roosevelt middle school sometimes. It's fun to watch.

I am not sure of the name but it is a middle school with two fields, or one field one playground. Nice and secluded usually.
Somewhat near the stadium.
Which is good when your plane recreates Top Gun Migs and decides to explode.

Karak, you are my hero

I read the thread this morning and I'm still laughing now during my lunch at the thought of your second maiden flight going from 0-shrapnel in under 5 seconds

Think the A10 has lousy flight characteristics in real life, seems to have carried over to the scale model. At least the delta wing one looks like its got more lifting area.

Looks too much like a missile, maybe DHS decided to shoot it out of the sky.

For your next plane, I'd suggest a Trainer type that has a large, forgiving wingspan and slower speed. Also, I'd check for any R/C flying clubs in your area. Most clubs have their own flying fields and are usually open to working with newcomers to the hobby.

I've been flying R/C on and off for 20-odd years now with my Dad and Uncles. It's a fun hobby.

Thanks sir.
Strange thing is. I have been flying for some time. But these are my first EDF and also my first experience with LIPO. I think the explosion was due to a bad cell in the lipo from being dropped as the charging went excellent. I have flown other peoples EDF's once in the air.
I also think that hand launching is a...art

As my girlfriend said yesterday.
"Not a single thing you ever try is normal. It is either a stunning success or ends in the dogs having about 2000 chewtoys"
Hahahaha.
Leave it to a girl to sum it up so nicely and correctly
