So, how awesome is Planetary...

I was just re-reading the last half of this yesterday on the train. It's possibly my all time favorite series. Ever.

As some one who hasn't heard of Planetary and is too lazy to read the Wikipedia description (and worried about spoilers), what is it about?

If you're really curious DC just reissued the 1st issue for $1

But it's about three people who act as 'architects of the unknown', and investigate crazy crap. It's also a romp thru modern pulp fiction. They touch on asian horror flicks, superhero archetypes, monster movies, pulp heroes, westerns and more, all filtered thru a sci fi lens.

And it's Warren Ellis writing, with John Cassaday on art. Cant get better than that.

I've never read The Invisibles. But from what I know about it, Planetary is a bit more...sedate? straightforward? It deals with crazy stuff, but not Morrison-level crazy.

It also seems to be the last full issue he will do, as he seems to be going the Brian "Rockstar" Bolland route, drawing covers and charging a hefty premium for it.

I would recommend you to buy Global Frequency instead, as it is basically a more grounded version of Planetary.

I am considering buying a metric ton of comics in the next couple of days, and Warren Ellis is one of the authors I have neglected the most in recent time. Does any one have any recommendations, besides the mentioned and Transmetropolitan?

Nextwave is pure, wacky fun. Almost no character development, just tons of crazy.

Warren Ellis is the most prolific writer in American comics. He is like Alan Moore, only drunk out of his mind. His most accessible work is Fell. It is a police procedural,neo-noir, that makes Sin City look like Peanuts. Only one trade has ever come out, There have 2-3 issues after that, and then he just stopped working. The 10th issue has been "in progress" for 2 years now.

But Fell is crazy awesome.

I have been interested in Fell for a while (the iFanboy used to pimp it pretty hard) but for some reason I feel like I shouldn't buy it. Maybe it is because you have to read it to really get it, but I dunno.

It's exactly how I described it. There is nothing more to "get". In fact, if you can find an issue online somewhere, any issue it doesn't matter, you can enjoy it without ever reading an issue that came before or after it. It's that accessible.

You used to be able to read the first issue of Fell for free on Newsarama, but since their server move it's vanished.

And Planetary Book 4 has even been dated. That's another sign. Now if only DC will hurry up and announce Absolute Planetary Vol. 2, that's all I need.
