Favorite iPhone/iPod Touch applications?
I know there's a separate thread for games, but I'm not really interested in that as I like using my newly acquired iPhone for info gathering and such. So far I've installed:
Ringtone Kindle Google Earth TwitterFon I tried looking for the app that lets you scan something and get reviews/price checks, but couldn't find it (it was 2:00 AM though). Any others that people care to share? Has anyone tried the Kayak app? It got some awful reviews but I trust you lot more than the rest of the world. |

Here's the apps I have installed, the decent ones anyway
.AppSniper - track application sales and set watch prices for specific apps. Facebook - not much more than the Facebook website but there you go. Wunder Radio - The best app I've found so far for internet radio. Supports stations that stream in WMA also. WiFinder - A quick way to check for and join open wireless hotspots Stanza - Download books, tons of free stuff listed Currency - Free but ad supported way to track currency prices. Kotoba! - Great Japanese dictionary and free gFlashPro - Useful for studying via flash cards. You can make your own flash card files via Google docs. Twinkle - I use this app for twitter. Also, has an interesting feature that shows twitter-ers in your local area. For example, you can list all messages from users within 10 km etc. (this service doesn't actually go through twitter, but their own service that runs on top of twitter).

My favorite by far (but kind of specific to guitar players): Guitarist's Reference has chords and voicings, scales, arpeggios, triads, chord/scale relationships, alternate tunings, music test, supports left hand guitarists too. This tool is invaluable to me because our songwriter uses a lot of jazz chords, augmented or suspended or 13ths, shit I've never heard of. I just whip out the iPhone and learn the chord and pick a cool sounding scale to go with it, to give me ideas for soloing over it. $2.99
Evernote - takes text notes, voice notes, and picture notes. You can organize them in notebooks, tag them, and search them later. It even does OCR on the pictures you take, so you can search words that are in your pictures (for instance, a photo of a whiteboard at work- you can search those words!). It's also a desktop app, but the iPhone piece is crucial for me. Free download, free service, there is an optional premium account for bigger monthly upload limit. Easy Wi-Fi for AT&T- one click to attach to any AT&T hotspot (like Starbucks) instead of having to wait for a web redirect, type in your phone number, hit OK, wait for a text message, click on it, get redirected again, and finally get online. As soon as I am in a hotspot, I launch Easy Wi-Fi and am connected in seconds. $2 last I checked. AmbiSci BP - brainwave audio patterns that enhance meditation, or focus, or best of all, SLEEP. You pick the brainwave pattern and then a sound effect to play over it.... for example, I pick the Sleep pattern (very slow pulsing) and then the Buddhist Rain effect (rain noises with the occasional bell or chime way off in the distance), set the volumes of both and then zone out. This app saved my ass when I was recovering from surgery and had a hard time sleeping. It knocked me out every time. 99 cents! X-Plane - Awesome motion-controlled flight sim, ported by the X-Plane developer, now supports multiplayer. Really pushes the 3D capabilities of the iPhone. Different versions include regular planes, jetliners, helicopters, etc. $9.99 and there is also a new, limited version called "Sullys Flight" that lets you take a shot at landing safely in the Hudson for 99 cents. EDIT: Sorry I included X-plane, since your OP said this wasn't for games. Still one of my favorite apps

Shazam is brilliant when you need to know some music.
I'm partial to Seadragon (I work on that team) I also dig iSynth ('cause I'm a photo nut)

I second Evernote, but every once and a while that upload limit seems a bit to low to me. I use it for so much though, especially nice for remembering restaurant names while in another town, as rare as that may be for me. The only issue is I have an iPod touch, but since I have my camera or phone everywhere I just take a snapshot and it's there for me! I also second Stanza, I've used it to read a good bit of books, particularly nice while listening to music with the same device!
Any music lover should have Last.Fm, Pandora, SHOUTcast, and iheartradio and wunder radio! The Weather Channel has an app now too and god is it ever useful! Was at a mall and checked the weather to see a huge storm heading our way, 10 minutes later the power was out at the mall! eBay is pretty handy if you wanna compare prices as well. |

Damn, some fine suggestions. I just downloaded iTunes at work and am about to dig around for some of these apps.
I also discovered Nuevasync, which has me over the moon. My gf and I live by Google Calendar, and having it sync up with my iPhone will save my ass on many an occasion. |

I currently use Nuevasync- however, Google recently added native sync support to their calendar. I think it's limited to 4 calendars.

I saw that, but it didn't look like it was very full featured or required you to download an app onto your phone. I only have the one calendar so multi isn't important for me. But it would be nice to have that all handled through Google. I have to investigate some more.
EDIT: Yeah, unless I'm reading it wrong it's only an app on your phone that lets you access GCal through your browser. I was looking for integration with the calendar feature on the iPhone. EDIT 2: I'm retarded. It looks like it works directly with the calendar feature. EDIT 3: Is there another keyboard for this thing? I hate it to pieces. Only 10% of what I'm trying to type seems to be accurate, and I don't have big fingers. Last edited by civil; 03-19-2009 at 01:50 PM. |

Have you tried typing in landscape mode (only works in safari)? I find I make a lot less mistakes. Thankfully they're adding landscape support for mail etc.

Civil, the trick is to not peck like you would a regular QWERTY phone; instead slide your fingers over the keys and release when the popup shows the letter you want.
Let me know if you try the built-in Gcal syncing- I would rather not have a third party involved and I only watch 3 calendars.

Ditto about the 3rd party, though they seem to be reputable. I'm really digging the feature though so I may keep it. I saw Google's looked fine and dandy, but really I'm already used to Nuevasync. |

I think you'll find landscape mode makes a big difference, or at least it does for me. Anyway, you can experiment via Safari, posting to CoG or something.

Any Iphone video guru's out there? I have a lot of stuff (TV programs mostly) that I'd like to be able to view on the go with the Iphone. I'm looking for apps that would let me convert the avi (sometimes mkv) files to a size/format that is Iphone compatable and viewable on the Iphone.
Also, I'd like to thank all the Iphonites here on CoG that have been responding to our Iphone newbie questions! |

For OSX I recommend iSquint for non mkv. For mkv you need a separate program, I use something which I think is called Mkvutil (from memory).

I have a quick question for iPhone users: Do you lock your phone? I feel like this thing has become such a part of my life now. So much personal information on it...I'm sorta nervous. I bank with Chase and they have an app you can download...but man, having that on my phone kills me.

The preset for iPhone/iTouch produces excellent results, and makes conversions from basically any input format - including MKV - a two-to-three click affair. |

I have to give big ups to the Lose It! app. I've been using it a few days now religiously and it's pretty fucking awesome, especially for a free app. If any of you gained winter weight like I did, even having something like this to keep a simple diary of your intake is great. Oddly enough I couldn't find a company website, but did find this little page.
Oh, and stay away from Pagence's Personal Productivity Assistant. I think it stinks. |
