[Rumor] New Wolfenstein Screens Leaked?

According to a report from Shacknews what you see above is a render of a multiplayer map from the upcoming Tech-4 Engine based Wolfenstein game.

Activision, id and developer Raven Software have refused to comment on the veracity of the images, which appear to show empty levels obviously set during World War II. All of the images have a Wolfenstein logo and a "property of id Software" watermark on them. The title of the gallery implies the game will be called Wolfenstein Returns. It is tentatively slated for release sometime this year.

It matches the look of the GI article from a couple of months ago.

Y'know, except it's missing the blue/green Nazi psychic ghostworld. And zombies.

Oh, we knew the game was coming - it was announced years ago - but these may be the first screens for it.

They can't be the first screens for it. I have a Game Informer from a couple of months ago with the cover story being this Wolfenstein game. The story is chock full of pictures.

I played the MP of that for like 5 years. I only really stopped just before TF2 came out. If this game is anything like that, I will be buying it Day 1.

I still have it installed on the Ubuntu partition of my laptop. Every once in a blue moon I will start it up just to go torch some Nazi scum.

The latest OXM has a feature on Wolfenstein. looks pretty damn good. Hopefully the mp will be the same as, if not better than RTCW. And include updated versions of Wolf3d or something cool for collector's edition.

You're gonna have special powers in this Wolfenstein. I think it sounds pretty promising, since it's by Raven.

id Tech-4 will send Epic scrambling, the same as they do every time id releases a new engine. id are the true leaders here, not Epic, not CryTek. They just take longer to put new engines out because the man behind them is more interested in launching rockets and driving Ferraris nowadays.

RTCW multiplayer was the second game that hooked me into the world of online gaming. The first being Unreal Tournament.

Huh? What? Id Tech-4 is a 5 year old engine, and it was overshadowed by FarCry and Half-Life 2 when Doom 3 finally came.

At this point, I doubt Epic gives a hot damn what id does except in the most academic ways.

Not really anymore. The Quake 3 and Unreal engines were big competitors, each with dozens, maybe hundreds of games based on them. However, the Doom 3 engine sank pretty fast, with very few third party games based off it, while the latest Unreal version gathered strength. You can argue technical merits, John Carmack is probably the best engine man there is, but id is not the big player in licensing their engine as they used to be.

I hope these are early screens as they look to "clean" for a WWII game. I think we're beyond the shiny, plastic look for war games, dammit.
