A Boy and His Blob Being Remade for the Wii

It's been rumored for some time now, but a preview of an upcoming Nintendo Power issue finally confirms the rumors as true. Seminal NES game A Boy and His Blob will be making a comeback on the Wii in some form. We won't know if this will be a full retail game or a WiiWare title until the issue appears on newsstands in another week (It is confirmed as a full retail Wii title, and not a WiiWare download). It is, however, definitely confirmation that the game will be a proper "reinvention" and not simply a Virtual Console release.

A Beautiful Friendship
Remember A Boy and His Blob on NES? Then you’re old! But this reinvention of the property on Wii is simply stunning.

Is this the one where you fed jelly beans to the blob? I remember I liked that game long ago.

Fantastic! I hope it's still as confusingly open-ended.

That's the one.

Depending on what color/flavor of jelly bean you fed the blob, he would turn into different, vaguely useful items to help solve puzzles.

This game was awesome.

Wow, I loved that game, it was so... insane and surreal. Root Beer Rocketships, bubblegum bubbles..

Glad its a whole new remake too.

This is the first thing I thought of when I saw The Maw. The premise has a lot of potential lets see what they do with it.

I only ever beat that game once. After struggling for weeks, I finally blasted the hell out of that king dude with my vitamin gun. Man, that game was rough! I was teased with a DS remake that went nowhere, so I really hope this turns out well. Those of you who haven't played the original, it's time for you to Ketchup!

Wow, this is an unexpected surprise. There are a lot of neat things they could do gameplay and puzzle-wise with this property. Add in some well thought out motion control and it could be even better.

I will buy a Wii for this. Yes I am completely serious. Haven't heard a thing about this one yet.

I love A Boy and His Blob, but I simply can't imagine it without those classic minimalist 2D graphics. For some reason the idea of seeing this in 3D breaks my heart.

Honestly, one of my least favorite games of all time. I know it has a cool atmosphere, and concept, but the game is a frustrating mess of poor control, bland level design, and trial-and-error puzzle solving. I think a lot of people look at it with rose-tinted glasses.

Frankomatic did a Lets Play of the whole thing, and it took less than fourty minutes to get through.

Okay, Nintendo just sold another Wii.

A Boy and His Blob is my favorite NES game ever, maybe tied with River City Ransom.

I agree. I think a 2D sidescroller with the same art style as the news post would look great, or even 3D models in a 2D setting like Lost Winds on WiiWare.

The game is suppose to be 2D.

Quote from neogaf who quote from Nintendo Power:
"- A Boy and His Blob is getting a remake on Wii a la Klonoa, but to much greater extent. All the visuals are 2D, almost like a simpler, more cartoony Muramasa. The game is, needless to say, very pretty. It's being developed by WayForward, who just put out LIT on WiiWare."

Ok....you can beat Contra in 20 minutes. That doesn't mean it should suck. I can understand your other reasoning though. It is really easy to die in that game. It made me decide that if I ever befriended a blob, I would have to break it off immediately. There's no way I'd go down into a sewer with him after what I've seen!

Soooooo psyched about this. I hope it's more than just a straight remake with new graphics. I would love to see some new jelly beans and puzzles, while retaining the open exploration aspects of the original. The new art style looks like it has a lot of promise.

I remember getting a Nintendo Power that had a big fold-out map for this game.

It didn't really help me much though. Not till I grabbed the Game Genie and got unlimited amounts of all the jelly beans.
