Square Enix On Steam

The Last Remnant will be making it's way to Valve's distribution platform on April 9th.

Quote:
According to a forum translation of Japanese gaming website Online Player EX's post made just a few hours ago (an additional web translation checks out), Square Enix's game The Last Remnant will be making it's way (worldwide) to Steam, the digital distribution service run by Valve. This effectively makes the game Steam's first Japanese role-playing game, which should come as great news to most.

The price for Japanese gamers is said to be ¥8,190 ($86 USD); our prices will be announced soon.

And I wonder if they would sell any copies if they put up the PC versions of FFVII and VIII on Steam...

I played both FF VII & VIII on the PC when they first came out. VII was a buggy mess and it was a chore to finish it, maybe it will run better now. VIII played just fine and is still one of my favorite RPGs.

That's how I played those games, myself. Never had any trouble with bugs, though. At least, after I upgraded my video card. I originally played on a Pentium I with an S3d Verge, which was infamous for making 3d games go slower than in software. A proper voodoo card played it just fine.

Right now, you can get a fan-made 'Ultima Edition' of FFVII that's not only patched, but has some enhanced features like an improved soundtrack - it uses the emulated .psf sound format instead of the midi files.

Mine crashed frequently when I got towards the last 3/4 or so of the way through. I remember getting the gold Chocobo so I could get the Knights of the Round Materia. I wanted to go after the Ultimate Weapons but it started crashing regularly. The fact you can't save anywhere you want made it a chore. I don't remember what hardware I played it on, it's been a long time.

I don't remember VII being crash-prone, but I remember having the upside-down cutscene bug early on.

Huh, didn't even know this was coming to PC. Maybe I'll give it a try.

I have both FFVII and FFVIII for PC, but barely played any of 8, mostly because I was so disappointed that the awesome music got turned into stupid MIDI files. Weak. Of course, I completely finished 7 on PC, never noticing the music at all. Maybe it was because I never played 7 on a console, just PC.

Here's to hoping a FF Pack makes it to Steam one day. I'd buy that, even it just was FF-FFVIII.

It will run like a jackrabbit on crack unless you have Mo-Slow or something. I got nostalgic 4 years ago about playing FFVII on the PC and I put it in and it ran superfast because I had upgraded my PC since playing it for the first time.

If it sells, then they will most assuredly put more of their catalog on there.

PC was how I first played FF7 in jr high or high school, back in 2000 or so. I ran it in a tiny 320x240 window on my Pentium 233, and loved every minute of it.

If they could get a high resolution version of the game on there (even with the low poly models and low res textures) I'd be stoked.

That would have been a compatibility problem, probably related to dual core timings, not something you'd need mo-slow for. The games weren't made that way.

Hopefully this is a good port. I'm interested in checking it out, but most Japanese console ports are mediocre at best.

Oh, and boo to Games for Windows, although I'm not surprised that this game uses it.

Why boo for it? Am I the only one that thinks its a good idea?
