[Updated] Lost Planet 2 Announced

Capcom had been teasing a new game announcement for today, to be revealed exclusively via video on Xbox Live, and to the surprise of few, that game is Lost Planet 2.

Following in the footsteps of the 2007 original, this sequel is set on the same planet, which is now plagued by induced climate change. What was once endless snow and ice now has a range of environments, including jungles.

The gameplay seems to have been tweaked a bit too. The mechs now sport multiple seats, the action seems a bit more tactical and the whole seems to be built for co-op play.

No release window was given for the game.

Source - CVG.

UPDATE - I've added the announcement trailer, thanks to Orca for finding it!

I really hope they fix the issues the first game had, it did so many things right but in the end I couldn't finish it due to the whole being knocked down thing.

I very much enjoyed Lost Planet. Yeah, it was full of flaws, but overall the game rose above them. Hoping the sequel shows that the dev team can listen to customers and tighten the experience.

I loved LP, so a sequel is great news. Capcom is really delivering this gen. So far they're the only japanese dev who has IMHO

Mmm, I liked some stuff of Lost Planet a lot. The combat was pretty well done and the art style was greta, fun multi too.

The story sucked though, and the rocket avalanches that hit you off your feet were annoying.

While they are certainly on top, I think Bandai Namco (apart from the outrageous DLC stuff) have adapted pretty well.

Lost Planet was a huge disappointment for me. The knockdown, the terrible voice-acting and story, the weird nerf bullets that seemed to simply tickle monstrous enemies, slow-moving mech combat, and a very cool grappling hook with a ridiculously short range.

I'll rent the sequel. Hopefully, this one will be better, but I don't have much hope for it.

Honestly, this is a sequel that is being financed by people who don't realize that the first one sold because the Xbox 360 was still new and thus every HD game was still novel. Plus, they did a pretty good job marketing it. Obviously, you can market a sequel well enough that people will forget an unremarkable original title (see Killzone 2), but unless that sequel delivers, it will be the death of the IP.

Like Halo?

I thought the guns were pretty meaty, you just had to hit most of them in the red shining ball sacks that's all.

The first game was awful. Hope they do better this time around. And make the story relevant.

The first game managed to fall into every design trap out there. I expect this to be hilariously bad as well.

Not like Halo. In Halo, the machine gun is a bit like that but the other guns that have longer windups or low ammo or long reloads, etc. tend to pack some real oomph.

Lost Planet's weapons often seemed like they should be devastatingly powerful and they simply weren't. I did like the special "don't shoot me here" weak spots on the big enemies. Those were really fun, but even then then the weapons that looked powerful simply felt weaksauce.

Even one of those goliath thingies in Halo 3 is going to go down if you put 2 rockets in it's face. That just isn't the case with Lost Planet. I could unload a whole shotgun at close range and not take some of those monsters down.

This contributed to an overall problem I had with Lost Planet. . . it's slow pace. Not only did I feel like I was doing a lot of the same things over and over, I felt like they took a long time to do. Game length shouldn't be a result of boring fights, slow movement, and repetitiveness.

Nice. I enjoyed the first one despite its flaws, and blowing things up was fun in that game.

But yeah... they really need to tone down the knock downs.

Wow, I'm surprised to see so much Lost Planet hate. I freakin' loved it.

I always felt most of the knockdowns were because of the deep snow - hard as hell to make fast reaction movements in knee-high snowdrifts. Regardless, I never felt like the knockdowns were dealbreakers.

Plus, I wanted to see Luka nekkid, but was sadly disappointed. Warmer temps in LP2 = higher probability of nekkid Luka.

I enjoyed and finished the first one. Looks like this one will not require you to collect energy and the grapple jump is still short. Then again, they only showed the grapple being used once, so hopefully it will be used better. This one also seems to be more like Gears 2 than the first LP. I would prefer to see the first one's story to continue and be more focused, but this one should be fun even if it doesn't continue the first story.

Here's the HQ stream. The game looks gorgeous, and co-op looks really interesting.

If that were the case, I could understand it. For me, the encounter that made me just put the game down for good was actually a boss fight inside a large room (a factory or warehouse, I don't recall which) where there was no snow, against a giant tank thing. It was just the final straw for me, I really really wanted to like the game because something about the look just struck a chord with me, but at that point I just couldn't do it anymore. I think I made it a good 75-80% through the game too.
