I watched The Fighter the other night, with Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg. It was a pretty good movie. Held my attention until the end.

Yeah, I had the same experience. I quite liked it, but I'm glad I hadn't rented it for kids to watch.

As for me, I just watch Cowboys and Aliens.

It was alright. I had low expectations going in, which helped. The whole story is kind of stupid, but it had some entertaining parts, and god help me I love Olivia Wilde so damn much.

I think my favorite line was that Harrison Ford sounded like "Clint Eastwood using a defective blender"

Saw The Avengers last night. Would be cool if there was a place to discuss it in more detail.

I forgot this thread existed for a second.

Saw Iron Man 2 yesterday. Liked it, but can understand the disappointment now. The last fight was maybe two minutes long. I wanted more Ivan kicking ass.

Watching Chronicle. Funny thing about found footage movies. The directors never really show how shitty found footage is or how shitty the sound is. Found footage movies are somewhat bad, but not as bad as real found footage.

Star Trek: Voyager is such a hit-and-miss show. Some episodes are great... others are rock-stupid. I'm currently watching an episode where an alien attaches itself to the chief engineer (a former Maquis). The Doctor doesn't have the experience needed to deal with the problem, and so they create another holographic doctor (a "consultant") using the exobiology database; they create the hologram based on the image of a Doctor Krell, a Cardassian doctor.

As the episode moves along, the crew finds out that Doctor Krell is basically a war criminal who conducted horrible experiments on Bajorans during the occupation of Bajor. So, while their crew mate is dieing, the crew starts fucking investigating the history of this doctor... who isn't even really on the ship. They start talking about deleting his program as punishment for what the real Doctor Krell had done, and one Bajoran crew member with personal experience with the real Doctor Krell suggests deleting all of his research from the exobiology database.

...Really, you guys? Really? If you don't like Doctor Krell, load the same damn data into any other holographic image you want. Have fucking Vic Fontaine be the exobiology expert, it doesn't matter, it took Ensign Kim like two seconds to whip this fucker up and he just used the image of Doctor Krell because he happened to be the foremost expert in exobiology. Hell, The Doctor himself had his image based on his programmer, who is nothing like him what-so-ever!

And why the hell would you delete the research? The damage has already been done, the only possible way to honor the people who it had been inflicted on is to use their suffering to help others.

Apparently they don't think it's ethical. This is one of the things they debated while their crew mate was being sucked dry by an alien pseudo-parasite.

Then again, the fundamental hologram was one of the dumbest aspects of NG+ StarTrek, for supposedly safe and ubiquitous technology, it sure as fuck went wrong often enough! To say nothing of the fact an Android getting emotions is a 8 year plot device... but for a hologram, meh.

Between the Holodeck and teleporter, no fucking way you'd get me to use either with the fuckup to normality ratio those things are rocking!

Yeah, I always found the Data/Hologram contradiction to be idiotic. All of the holograms have emotions, all of them are intelligent and just as independent as Data. The only difference is that they don't have physical bodies. Why can't their programs be put into robot bodies?

I always thought of it as a size constraint. Data's "Positronic Brain" was always hyped up, so I assumed it was some hard/illegal to replicate technology. While the Hologram programs were using the much more extensive resources of the ship's computers to sustain its program. Forcing it to always be tethered to the ship. So there wouldn't be a reason to give it a robot body (even a marionette style one) if it's going to be on a ship with holographic/force field projectors anyway.

Of course, I freely admit this is probably me just bullshitting myself.

I always thought it was more of the doctor hologram being sort of a super high end relational database algorithm like a futurisitic "Watson" that instead of answering jeopardy questions, it was able to determine diagnosis... and Data's Positronic brain was more of an ever expanding, self programming, self correcting, and self aware true AI routine.
