Last night I watched Luc Besson's new film, Les aventures extraordinaires d'Adèle Blanc-Sec. It was charming and fun, but felt a little meandering. It's certainly not Luc Besson's best, but if you like mummies, pterodactyls, and spunky French girls, it's a good way to spend a few hours.

And god bless the French... it's a family friendly adventure film, and the lead actress still strips down for a bath scene.

I like Luc Besson. I like spunky French girls (married one). Think this deserves more of my attention.

I recently saw 'Knight and Day'. I really dug it- reading about the issues they had getting the movie made, it seems like this is kind of an action movie by committee with only a select few people (and audience members) getting it. I wish they had used two people who weren't huge movie stars for the leads, because people wouldn't have written it off so easily.

I enjoyed the script and how it was shot and directed, but thanks to the big budget and name stars it still felt bland somehow.

Except for the last third or so of the movie, I actually liked Knight and Day, too. The details are a bit fuzzy, I'll admit, but I remember it suddenly feeling very rushed and half-baked from that point on. And I think the fact that I enjoyed it from the start so much really deepened my disappointment.

EDIT: And that music video will haunt my dreams, Voodoo... O_o

The first season of The Wire was finished on Sunday night. I can't wait to start the second!

Oh, and Tron bored me to tears. I won't be seeing the new one.

This is what I was talking about. The reason their is no Blu-ray/DVD remaster coinciding with the sequel.

Tron always sucked, I never understood the appeal. The new one looks as bad.

Now, the Tron arcade game? Awesome.

I believe Tron had appeal to early arcade kids because they could "get into the game". It was shoddily written, acted and directed and the revolutionary effects now are rather jarring.

But purely as a Sci-fi concept, it is right up there with Blade Runner and 2001. There can be a good movie there.

This was a pleasant surprise. The only reason I watched was to check my internet connection and that Emma Stone is very talented. The premise, classic set in modern high-school, is quite trite, but she, more or less, makes this film. Definitely worth a watch.

Despicable Me
A film written by parents, for parents, to watch with their kids. The jokes are silly and childish, but it did get some LOLs out of me. I did feel weird, watching it alone, but it was entertaining.

Out of the Past
I am a sucker for Film Noir. This is the perfect noir. The perfect chiaroscuro cinematography is just awesome. Jane Greer kills it as the femme fatale. Robert Mitchum was also cool, but what was up with the tie?
Easy A has a fair bit of talent between Emma Stone, Stanley Tucci and Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe. Actually, strike that, the movie was boring except where Stone's character was interacting with her parents. Nothing else had charm - and it's almost as much a bastardization of the events of Hawthorne's novel as the Demi Moore adaptation.

Despicable Me was OK. I'll take it over Megamind because at least the talent in the former invested itself.

Out of the Past is one of my favorite films of all time. Brilliant screenplay. I sometimes just load it up to watch the opening scene at the gas station and diner a few times. Tight onscreen poetry that can get your creative juices flowing.

I also recently saw Exit Through the Giftshop. A very good "documenrtary". I do believe the accusations of 'hoax' are real, and that makes it even more brilliant.

Just watched The Black Hole with the Mrs.

Holy crap. "That Scene" with Maximilian still terrifies the fuck out of me. It does not show very much, and it is over quickly, but it is so effective!

Overall, the movie has a lot of merit, and a ton of good ideas that could use further exploration. Hampered by wooden acting and cheezy effects.

Gawd the Cygnus is stunning and the music is top-notch.

Can't wait to see what they do with the remake.

For a Disney film, The Black Hole was pretty fucked up and Maximillion is a pretty terrifying villain, much more so than the bearded bad guy.

I always found it humorous that the villain, played by Maximilian Schell, has a robot named Maximilian. It was pretty intense for Disney, that's for sure.

Black Death, starring Sean Bean. Amazing movie, I'm still a bit shaken up by it.
