Comic Book Recommendations

So, I was in my local comic book shop today just browsing around and lo and behold, I had no idea what I wanted to read! So, I'm curious members of the Colony. What should I be reading right now?

I've been mostly looking up as many Batman stories as I can and I think I'm pretty filled up with that universe. I'm looking for something different...and I'm looking to get back into the Marvel universe as well. I'm more or less using this for my own purposes but this can be a general thread for general recommendations as well. So, in general I'm looking too...

- Break into the Marvel universe (which superheroes have the good stories running now?)
- Find general series and anything decent that you might think is worth reading that I should keep a look out for.
- Just any DC related recommendations in general...

Planet. Hulk.

It's the best canonical story I've read in either Universe. Art's fantastic, too.

edit: Crap, I just realized you're trying to read comics, not old trades. Do what I said anyway.

Old trades or new trades, it's doesn't matter to me. I'm just looking for something to read.

Are you only into superhero stuff? There is a world beyond DC and Marvel, where most of the good stuff lies.

Please please please read Planet Hulk. It's almost completely standalone, requires no knowledge of Marvel's Universe other than who the Hulk and maybe the Silver Surfer is, and is like Spartacus if he was huge and green.

Iron Man is good. I've had a Punisher tattoo for years, so obviously I like him too.

Walking Dead is great, and one I pretty much recommend to anyone. Casanova is pretty much my favorite recent comic, and is highly recommended. Fell is a close second. Amazing Joy Buzzards is a fun book, with new issues coming soon. The Boys is one of the few superhero books I read, and I only do it because it is fantastic. Doktor Sleepless is a good beginning to a potentially great story, and the first trade should be out soon.

If you want to check out a good, free, serialized online comic book, you should read FreakAngels. This also has a trade coming out soon.

I'd suggest giving Kick Ass a look. It is only on its 4th issue so you'd be able to catch up quickly.

Basically the premise is a comic book guy decides to become the super hero like all of those that he reads about. Things don't exactly go so well, great art and interesting story thus far.

I believe it is written by Mark Miller, who wrote Civil War.

I guess there is already a deal for a movie based on the comic and they are working on the screenplay alongside of current comic.

That's all I have for now. Then again, I am a fan of anything Ellis writes for Marvel.

Non-superhero awesomeness:

Local (greatest indie movie never made)
Fables
Jack of Fables
The Walking Dead(ZOMBIIIIIIIIIES)
Criminal
Scalped
SANDMAN
Buffy season 8
Angel after the fall
100 bullets
Y-the last man

Invincible is probably the best superhero book out there. Powers is also great, but not for everyone.

You could try Runaways or Invincible. Walking Dead is awesome, too.

If you like zombies - The Walking Dead is amazing.

Also, read Preacher.

I third Runaways and second House of Mystery (one of, if not the best series going right now, IMO).

I will also add:

Tiny Titans
The Spirit
Skaar: Son of Hulk

I'll post more when they come to me.

If you're willing to do trades, The Preacher was a lot of fun. I also second Fables as something to pick up.
