Sony: The Resistance Is Over...For Now

What was once one of the most popular franchises on the Playstation 3 is being put on the shelf, at least temporarily. When asked about the future of the Resistance series, SCE Europe VP Daniel Brooke said the publisher has "no definitive plans" to continue the series at this time. The two most recent installments in the franchise - 2011's Resistance 3 for the PS3 and May's Resistance: Burning Skies for the Vita - received similar reviews to the earlier installments, but never hit the sales numbers of their predecessors. Original series developer Insomniac has also moved on to the multiplatform co-op shooter Overstrike for EA.

While there may not be any concrete plans for a new Resistance title now, the series was popular enough that it's unlikely that Sony will keep it under wraps forever.

That’s unfortunate. From all accounts R3 was pretty damn good and left things rather open. R2 was pretty damn disappointing (though someone really needs to copy it’s co-op, that was amazing), and R1 and Retribution were good. I’d love to see the series continue, but I personally still have Burning Skies and R3 to play. A sequel starring the lead from Retribution would be great…….

It never really caught on as well as they wanted, but to be fair it was always in the shadow of a Killzone title following shortly after. Poor planning by Sony, putting their two flagship FPS up against one another.

A shame, but understandable. I loved the Resistance series despite it's flaws and I never got into Killzone (only played the first and it really turned me off). Good series but I think a solid handful of games isn't a bad legacy to leave.

Yeah, I never understood that. They really should have pushed one instead of both if they were trying to make some kind of Halo phenomenon.

The Vita iteration is horrid but the series itself was enjoyable. I think we all knew this day would come.

The series never grabbed me. Glad they are moving onto new IP like Overstrike.

And K3 sucked balls while R3 was awesome, go figure.

I think Uncharted is Sony's key shooter now. Like Gears.

that stinks. It seems like Resistance was just getting its legs.

Really? I feel like it's had it's legs for a while now. While I wouldn't mind experiencing the world again sometime in the future, I do like that the plug is being pulled on (somewhat of) a high note and they didn't completely run the series into the ground.

I picked up 1 and 2 since I recently grabbed a PS3. Was very disappointed. Just a generic FPS game. DNF is way better and much more fun. So I can't say I will miss the generic franchise.

the first game is on of the most derivative FPS games I've ever played. I'm honestly very surprised they made 3 of it.

Did none of you use any of the secondary fire options for the weapons? Resistance had some of the more interesting weapon designs seen in an FPS. How that can be called generic is beyond me.

This thread has inspired me to go back and finally finish R3. Not sure why I stopped playing... I was enjoying myself.
