More Nintendo News: Smash Bros, Prof Layton, Fire Emblem & New Super Mario Bros 2

In the same webcast where they announced the 3DS XL, Nintendo made several other announcements.

First up was the revelation that Nintendo will be working in conjunction with Namco Bandai on both versions of Super Smash Bros. Series producer Masahiro Sakurai notes that they've just begun development on the games - in fact they were announced at E3 2011 before development began - so it's going to be a while before we get our hands on them.

Next up was Super Mario Bros 2, coming out in August for the 3DS. Nintendo is planning to release paid DLC stages for the game's Coin Rush mode, where you race to capture coins and post your best time to a leaderboard. They didn't say how much the new levels would cost, but they haven't even begun work on them, hoping to get fan feedback first.

Other key bits:

- A demo for Kingdom Hearts 3D is available now on the eShop.

- Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask will launch in November on the 3DS.

- Nintendo will be releasing 2 new Virtual Console games each week from now through the end of July. Titles include Super Mario Land, The Legend of Zelda, Kirby's Pinball Land, and Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3.

- Fire Emblem Awakening will be released on the 3DS sometime in 2013 in North America.

Cool thing the Layton game is doing; they will be offering a free downloadable puzzle every day for a year from launch day on.

And once again Nintendo fucks the early adopters. Guess I'll be spending $200 in August.

Hardware looks nice, and given how much I LOVE my DSi XL, I'll be happy to upgrade.

I feel the form factor of the OG 3DS is perfectly fine, I don't feel screwed in the slightest. Doesn't hurt I have 10 GBA classics which may never be made available to 3DS owners otherwise.

I've been really on a Nintendo kick lately, playing mostly Wii and 3DS versus PC or other consoles, so all the positive (to me) Nintendo news is exciting. I'll get NSMB 2 as soon as I can beat this frickin' last bonus level of Super Mario 3D Land...

How on earth is releasing a larger, more expensive model fucking the early adopters?

I'm not that interested in the new system unless I get one and give my launch 3DS to my son. But having a release date for Layton, now THAT'S news!

Because they just HAVE to buy the next one! It's like with iPads. They should just stop trying to improve their products.

In any event, I'm going to go get my crying over with before Nintendo drags me kicking and screaming into the next console generation just because I want the next Super Smash Bros.

So I went looking for info on what team from Namco Bandai might be working on Smash Bros., and IGN had info here. It's apparently the Tekken team, presumably fresh off finishing Tekken 3D: Prime Edition for the 3DS.

Unfortunately, that game was criticized for lag in online multiplayer. Hopefully they'll do better this time - decent online alone should be enough to make it a fantastic game.

I have the Ambassador games as well - I'll be transferring them over when I buy my XL.

Why do I feel fucked? because it's been just over a year since I bought the 3DS I already own, which I paid $250 for. It still feels "new."

To see a version come out for a lower price that I paid, with screens that much larger, and "addressed issues" like the use of real buttons below the home screen instead of that membrane they have on the OG version.

If this came out next march, so it had been at least 2 years since the release of the original, I wouldn't feel as bad.

"Because they just HAVE to buy the next one! It's like with iPads. They should just stop trying to improve their products."

To this I have to respond... when the "next" one is clearly better, as is the case here, then YES I have to buy it.

I bought the iPhone 4 because of the Retina display and better camera than the iPhone 3G I was using. I did not buy the 3GS or 4S becuause neither really brought much more than a speed bump to the table over what I already owned at the time. With iPads - I bought the original, skipped the iPad 2 (even though you could argue that the cameras, speed, and form factor were all things that made it "better."), but bought the iPad 3 becuase it was leaps and bounds ahead of the first gen that I had (all of the iPad 2 improvements plus a much better display and even more speed).

So no, I don't have to buy EVERY NEW VERSION of something that comes out... but when I feel it's justified, I don't mind opening my wallet (because why earn my money if I can't enjoy spending it?). In this case, the opening of the wallet is just a little begrudged.

Tekken 3D is a traditional fighting game, so somewhat. Pretty sure the networking challenges are comparable; I'd think Smash Bros. is more difficult due to having up to 4 players.

So don't open your wallet. If you don't like this kind of behavior from a company don't reward them with your money. You'll still be able to play 3DS games.

It sounds to me like you are screwing yourself. I don't see how Nintendo is making you buy this "upgrade".

How exciting. I can't tell you how excited I am to buy levels where I collect coins. That is clearly my favorite part of Mario, and I would totally love to buy levels where I do nothing but collect coins as quickly as possible. Fantastic, thank you blessed Nintendo for gracing us with this content.
