EA: Syndicate Reboot "Didn't Work"
![]() EA has bet on several revivals lately. According to EA Games label head Frank Gibeau, they're batting about .500 on those bets. Gibeau said that the Starbreeze-developed shooter revival of Syndicate was "something that we took a risk on. It didn't pay off - it didn't work." From the sound of it the property is likely going back in the vault for a while. The prospects are better for their other recent revival, SSX. He called that revival "very successful" and said more is on the way for the series. Overall EA is going to keep trying to mix legacy IPs into the mix and see which stick. Next up is Maxis' Sim City. Mirror's Edge 2, please.
I can see why Syndicate didn't work... Too similar on face value to the Deus Ex reboot.

Well what do you know? Taking a beloved franchise and shoving it into the FPS genre was a failure? Good, I hope this tells publishers that other genres are still viable, although it will probably just make them pump out more sequels for their other hits.
Unfortunately EA seems to have taken this as "people don't want Syndicate" rather than "people don't want yet another FPS". Putting the franchise back into the vault, rather than making a game more like the originals (say for Steam and iOS) is silly.

My main problem with it was that I din't really get if it was a MP focussed game or a SP one. The launch trailer made it look cool, but reviews just said it was short and had a novel mp with a hefty focus on it.
Marketing didn't help much. All I saw was a big ass Syndicate logo, but I never felt I had to own it. It was just there all of a sudden. And a lot of gamers don't know Syndicate besides us oldy's.

EA seems to be going down the crapper in many ways and not just in the reboot department. This is not meant to be a troll post. I hope that SimCity does great. I have just been very wary of anything EA has their hands in lately. One problem that really got me fired up was an origin update I recently applied. It effectively crashed the Origin application and kept me from running any game that required an Origin connection. I had to do a system restore and roll back to a previous version to get it running again. That is only one issue I have EA among a few. I really hope they get their shit together.

I wouldn't say I hate EA, I just disagree with many of their choices (ie. Syndicate). Otherwise, though, I love the EA Sports division and I own plenty of EA games that I enjoy/ed.

Yeah, there are plenty of EA games that I own that I have enjoyed. Not many in the sports genre. I liked Tiger Woods but I haven't played any of those since TW 2008.

![]() In all seriousness, this game would probably appeal a lot to PC gamers and EA probably lost a ton of sells by not playing nice with Steam. |

Eww, EA can stay the heck away from NOFL.
Gross, bean. Just gross. ![]() I don't want one of my favorite games to turn into some dude-bro shooter with Cate Archer sporting Double-D's.

I heard a lot of good things about. Wanted to get in on the console though. I heard there were bloom issues on the computer. Didn't bother to see if there was a way to adjust it though.

Plus, Monolith made NOLF, and they're still around, right? Why would EA even be involved?
Is Will Wright involved with Sim City? If not, what's he doing? |

Will Wright left Maxis a while back. 5-6 years ago maybe. He's doing multimedia stuff but I don't think he's doing VG stuff at the moment

Well duh. Stupid to reboot the series like this. Asshats. I played it and beat it in two short evenings of pc and it was pretty and somewhat fun despite the boss fights but it wasn't Syndicate. They are dredging up beloved old names like Origin and Syndicate and slapping them on any old thing.
Success of the reboot would have been twofold. 1, more FPS Syndicate games. 2. That's it. Failure would mean no more Syndicate games at all. I don't think original fans care much as both outcomes mean the same thing to them.

Want to revive something, revive Shogo: Mobile Armor Division. Monolith made some kick ass games back in the day.

Oh god why? Out of all the cool stuff from the late 90's that could be revived...you want one of the single worst games ever made!?

I thought the main problem with Syndicate as an FPS was that it was one of those super linear ones in the CoD mold with a few cool things with the hacking. But why wasn't the upgrade system fleshed out better? Why wasn't there much player choice? like upgrading weapons tech, working with a team, any of it. It was a run down corridors while shooting dudes game.
Which is a bummer as the nechanics of it were quite good and it's cover system was great, but the scope of the game was so.. by the numbers. The multiplayer was more interesting, but had so few maps that it became highly repetitive and there was no randomization. If the MP had something like Left4Dead 2's Director and just some randomness to spice it up, it could have had some legs. It's easy to sit there and go "bleh! it should have been game-type X!" but it was a FPS, that had some good parts, lets be grown ups and look at why the new game didn't do well on it's own merits, shall we? I started to hate the SSX reboot the more I played of it, like every track where there was an abyss to fall into and die? fucking hated it. Ran totally counter to what was fun about the game which was going fast, then getting massive air, having to worry about DYING sucked all the fun out of those tracks, and the somewhat odd movement at times just added to it. Remove the deadly descents, add back in things like boarding on flash frozen tsunamis, down through neon cities, rails that are crazy. Bring it back to SSX and Tricky, because the "realistic" world stuff was part of the downfall. |
