Doom 3 BFG Edition Announced

DOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMM!

Ahem. Ok so Bethesda and id have announced the Doom 3 BFG Edition, a remaster of Doom 3 for the 360, PS3 & PC later this year. D3BFG packages a modernized, high-def version of Doom 3 - and yes, you can now shoot and use the flashlight at the same time - with the Resurrection of Evil expansion and seven never before seen stages called the 'Lost Levels.' Doom 3 also includes 3D and 5.1 sound support, modern checkpoints and saves, Achievements and Trophies and a refined control scheme. As a bonus the collection also adds Doom 1 & Doom 2.

Look for the Doom 3 BFG Edition this fall on the 360, PS3 & PC.

Will buy day one. I absolutely loved Doom 3 and never got around to the Resurrection of Evil expansion.

Doom 3 was the shiznit, though I too never played the expansion.
Also, though I am in the minority on this, I will say that the mechanic of not having the gun out with the flashlight was an interesting game mechanic and totally ramped up the tension.

It was a mediocre game with a blah story and uninspired character designs. That said, I had a lot of fun with it. Something about the gameplay is what kept me coming back to it, so not a day 1 for me...but def. a purchase.

Yeah, that was my reaction. It's like Bethesda sent Carmack a memo saying "Find us something we can actually sell," and when he rooted around in his closet, this is what he came up with.

I liked that as well. It may have made little sense in a real world context, but it really kicked up the tension in the game. I wonder if this will keep the online co-op intact? I never got around to trying that either.

Doom 3 was awesome. That whole duct-tape fiasco was a testament to the intended ambiance of the game and how many girly-men there are out there.

Completely agree. I was working at Gamestop when this originally came out and when discussing it with customers, would actually get chewed out for not using the duct tape mod. I would just tell them I preferred to play the game the way it was designed, for which I was usually called stupid.

I loved the tension it created by leaving you so vulnerable. I did smack more than a few imps in the face with the flashlight as I fumbled around trying to get a gun equipped.

(I guess I'm a bit of a hypocrite though because I modded the fuck out of Skyrim, just not in any way that affects actual gameplay.)

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMONSTERCLOSETS

...yeah.

I enjoyed playing it but it literally felt like the game would be ten minutes long without that mechanic.

If you can't design tension into a game without an arbitrary mechanic that makes no sense, then you've failed as a designer. Plenty of games are scary that let you shoot and see at the same time.

I actually liked Doom 3 for the most part, but it could have been a lot better if it wasn't using the flashlight and monstercloset as crutches.

I disagree. There is a multitude of different ways to do scares and monster closets are probably the most elementary of them. They still work though. Just because Amnesia and Silent Hill do it differently, doesn't devalue Doom, only ones preference.

Doom 3 with monster closets? Doom 3 is monster closets.

Hard Reset had monster closets and was damn fun. I can understand not liking them, but they're not bad design. A little lazy, sure, but are they really that much worse than teleporting or drop-shipping enemies in?

I don't mind them occasionally, but they needed more variation for their enemy setups so it didn't feel like every other corridor was just a trigger for a door to open behind you.

I started walking down long corridors facing backwards so I could get the jump on the monster closets. When I was more afraid of what was spawning behind me than I was blundering ass-first into a room full of enemies then that should tell you something.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm bashing on the game, I really enjoyed the graphics, the enemies, and the ambience. But it became REALLY one-note with the gameplay in ways the originals never did.

As long as there is not a silly $60.00 cost to this I may consider buying this. It better look damn pretty and not shitty like RAGE did when it was first came out before patching.

I wonder if there'll be a 'BFG Edition upgrade' for those of us who already own it on Steam.
