Bitches, you don't watch Snow White and the Huntsman for Kristen Stewart or Charlize Theron. It's all about Chris Hemsworth.

Lets gay this thread up a bit.

Just got back from this and it had way more fantasy-ish elements than I was expecting. The bridge troll was pretty cool and there's a whole Princess Mononoke scene that was pretty cool. Overall I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. For being what looked like a chick-movie along the lines of that Red Riding Hood movie it was much more action packed than I expected.

That actor is quite handsome. Now I have one more reason to see this movie.

I thought the movie had thematic problems, many extraneous plot elements, and serious scripting problems in the third act.

But the biggest thing of all is that the movie couldn't decide if it was a more realistic re-imagining of the story or just a film adaptation of a fairy tale.

Like, that bit at the beginning, where Snow White says the lord's prayer. Made me think "ooh neat, it's like our world, with just some fantasy elements." And then they didn't mention any kind of religion ever again.

And like
That scene when Charlize Theron talks to the mirror, but then the brother looks in the room and can't see the golden figure, I was like "Oh, the mirror's not actually magical, she's just kinda nuts with some magic powers. But they never address that, and when the mirror's prophecy comes true, it vindicates the stance it's a real thing.

Plus, our investment in the story really depends on whether or not we believe the characters. And snow white only ever had two categories. 1: innocent, beautiful waif, then 2:
Warrior woman.

Also,

That whole romance with Chris Hemsworth was so fabricated it fucking hurt. He spends a whole movie acting like a father figure, and now they're in love? It's like they had Hemsworth in the male lead and felt obligated to have him kiss the female lead, even though it defies the established dynamic and invalidates the basis of the Huntsman as a drunken, grieving widower.

Also, Kristin Bell is a very un-expressive actress in this movie, which is a shame as Snow White's a very energetic, affable character.

I wonder if just a shit-ton of footage got cut and this was at one point a good piece of cinema. It sure isn't NOW. As it is, it almost took the Thor shine right off Hemsworth's apple for me.

Kristen Bell has actual talent.

RIGHT. My bad. No offense to Veronica Mars.

I've heard back when she did Indie flicks Stewart could act pretty well. But I assume years of twilight robbed her of that. If you don't exercise a muscle, it atrophies and that's a fact.

For 1:

I think I remember a scene where they - it may have been Will - mention something about England. I want to say there was one other brief reference that makes you think it does take place in our world still, though most of it was throw-away.

For 2:

My assumption was because the mirror itself is magic and can only be used/seen by people with that inclination. I don't think the brother had any magical leaning so all he saw was a mirror where the sorceress was able to use it properly.

Totally agree on 3. I think there were a few glimpses that he's coming around but it was never really addressed, though I could be assuming that because you just know it's going to happen because it always does.

I watched this recently too.

It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't really a memorable film, it did seem a bit all over the place.

The most interesting part was when the dwarves showed up and we were all playing "guess the actor"

I got Ray Winston, Bob Hoskins, Simn Peggs friend I forget his name, and I recognised a few more.

I rather liked this movie.

The script is simple - that's as much a compliment as it is awkward dialogue - but most fairy tales are; and the theme of female beauty is as timely as ever. Most importantly, this movie has heart. I can feel it. And that to me is worth any number of amateurish mistakes.

The acting is superb. Charlize Theron pulls off a memorable role, one self-aware and playfully destructive of her golden blonde image. The dwarves are hilarious, and the CGI has Miyazaki all over it.

I find Kristen Stewart young, not untalented. She will forever be one of those young actors who will be known by their first role; in this case, the girl from Twilight. But unlike the typical blonde starlet, she's interesting to watch. The way emotion plays across her face I find new and refreshingly innocent. I believe if given more time, she would've made Snow White her own.

For the interested, wait until the BR releases. But if your wife/gf insists you take her to the movies, this is preferable to many chick flicks I've suffered through.

Yes, wood can be very expressive if you have a carving knife of a director.

And not one of them could make Stewart act.

The girl might as well be a corpse for all the expression you get from her.

I was referring to J's post. It can't really be all of their fault.
