Square Announces Sleeping Dogs, Formerly Know As True Crime Hong Kong

True Crime Hong Kong is dead, long live Sleeping Dogs!

It's been an interesting year for the game formerly known as True Crime Hong Kong. It was canceled by publisher Activision at about this time last year, before being snatched up by Square Enix a few months later. Now it's been redubbed Sleeping Dogs (Square Enix acquired the game, but not the rights to the True Crime property) and has this snazzy new live action trailer. The trailer doesn't show a lick of actual gameplay, but it gives you a sense of what it will play like: a brutal and violent open world shooter. You play as Wei Shen, an undercover cop who has to infiltrate the most dangerous organized crime syndicate in the world: the Hong Kong Triads.

Look for Sleeping Dogs to drop late this year on the 360, PS3 & PC.

Completely off topic, but are there Chinese game developers? It struck me that a Japanese developer publishing an British game set in Hong Kong may strike a Chinese gamer as odd.

On topic: will there be a dog in this one? Besides the sleeping dogs?

There are Chinese game devs, but their work is rarely exported or localized.

I do really like Hong Kong action movies, so the trailer might not show gameplay but they've got my attention at least.

Hope the actual game is a good approximation of the action in the trailer.

I don't think anyone here is under that illusion.

But Dead Island was still a good game that also happened to have an unrealistic hype trailer.

Great little movie, but you sold me nada at this point. Give me some Batman esque combat but with guns set in Hong Kong and you might have me sold.

I would play that game easily. Reskin the Bats, let me have some guns, and let me loose in the underbelly of Hong Kong. Sounds like fun to me!

Off the top of my head, there's Ubisoft Shanghai (responsible for the tomb raiding portions of the newer Assassin's Creeds) and American McGee's Spicy Horse.

I think they were real life actors, not computer graphics...
