Epic's Next Is...Fortnite, a Tower Defense Game

Come on, did anyone really see this coming? Epic Games announced their next game at the VGAs yesterday: Fortnite, a tower defense-type game where you have to defend against hordes of rampaging zombies. The above trailer is all we know about it so far, but it's certainly a departure from what Epic has been up to for most of the past 15 years.

Wow, that looks kinda cool. If the game has that whole build-it-then-defend-it kind of gameplay, then I might be interested. Hopefully building custom forts with pieces you find lying around will be possible.

Not excited. If it's one genre that is overbloated these days, it's this one.

Who knows, I could like it. I thought Orcs Must Die was fun, but it was a bit different. You HAVE to be pretty different these days in the genre though, or what's the point of yet another tower defense game?

This was probably the most disappointing "reveal" of that awful show. That art style is terribly ugly.

There is definitely defense in this game, but has it been confirmed that it's specifically of the tower defense variety?

It doesn't look like zombies are the only enemy, though. There's also some kind of shadow-hopping imp, and presumably there will be other types, too.

Looks more like a Minecraft type thign to me...maybe without the mining stuff.

I'd prefer a more developed version of Gears 3 Horde Mode to a traditional tower defense game.

The graphical style isn't my thing though. It looks like a slightly better textured TF2, which I also don't like the style of.

Sooo from what I got from this trailer is...

-tf2 art style
-build shit ala horde mode(caltrops, lay down a gun turret...yeah..)
-defend against zombies
-what a big let down

Yeah, count me in the unexcited camp. It seems like they just tossed several cliches into a pot and this is what came out.

Maybe this is supposed to be some sort of tech demo for the next UE? I don't know, it looks like TF2 Horde mode to me.

Also disappointed. Game design by numbers, at first glance. Who know, perhaps it will turn out to be fantastic, but I'm not impressed at all right now.

as much as I loved playing defensively in like EVERY single RTS I've ever played (especially Star Craft. GOD I love bunkers and siege tanks!)...I find most if not all tower defense games I've bothered with to be completely tedious.

If it's less tower-defense, and more third-person action + base building, I'll be interested. I do like the cartoonish art style.

Take a look at the "ghoul" enemies. They're emaciated people with the skin of their head pulled back so the skull pops out of the mouth.
