U.K. outraged by storming of embassy in Tehran

Quote:
Iranian students stormed two British diplomatic sites in Tehran on Tuesday, vandalizing buildings and sparking international outrage in the process.

The students barged past police into the British Embassy in downtown Tehran and reportedly besieged a compound in the north of the city that houses British diplomatic staff, smashing windows, looting and setting at least one vehicle on fire.

British Prime Minister David Cameron called the events "outrageous and indefensible" and warned that the Iranian government would face "serious consequences" for failing to protect diplomats in line with international law.

At the White House, U.S. President Barack Obama said he was "deeply disturbed" by the attacks and said it was a sign "that the Iranian government is not taking its international obligations seriously."

The French and Russian governments also condemned the attacks. And in Ottawa, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird described the events as "quite outrageous."
seems like people want blood?

Yeah, they'll impose a few more sanctions. Those have worked so well in the past.

I may be out of the loop, but did something in particular trigger new anti UK sentiment in Iran?

The UK has responded by refusing to syndicate Monty Python to Iranian television

I was actually surprised that they had an embassy still running in Tehran.

People think Iran is a pariah state. It's not. Most of Europe's (and the world's) governments have spent the past 32 years thinking we were fanatics who took a little hostage situation and blew it way out of proportion.

The UK imposed sanctions based on UN findings that Iran was working on a nuclear device.

Also, everywhere else students are leading anti-government protests. In Iran, students beat protestors and cooperate with militias. It's so bizarre

Don't worry guys, I edited my signature using Tapatalk!

I do believe that the UK was not one of those countries. I liked a comment I saw on a news site about the whole situation: "Remember when we (UK) invaded their embassy? Good times."

Well Bachmann would close our embassy! So there!

You'd think someone who supposedly knows so much about the Reagan era would know one of the most commonly known facts about that whole Iran Hostage thing.

I was more interested in Jeremy Clarkson saying all the union protestors should be shot.

Besides, when our students riot, they at least have the sense to nick everything not nailed down, not just burn it, now that's just wasteful.

You mean, like the fact that the whole "Iran Hostage thing" took place entirely during the Carter Administration?

I can imagine there was a lot of frantic destruction on the behalf of the UK employees as well.

Ah, but it was "solved" by Reagan. Its one of his Magical Moments to most of his worshipers, even though he had nothing to do with it (or did he, omg conspiracy!!!?!?!).

Uh, no. The hostages were released before Reagan even took office.

edit: In other words, why are suggesting that his worshipers are in turn suggesting that Reagan stopped the crisis in question? I've never heard such a thing.

Well, the hostages were released on January 21, 1981 -- the day Reagan took office. One need not posit a conspiracy to theorize these events were not unrelated, and that the Iranians chose to release the hostages rather than deal with Reagan (who had been rather critical of Iran).

Well...uh...they did posit a conspiracy theory.
