Report: Ubisoft on Xbox 720 projects for 2012, 'major' Sony dev shifting to PS4

Quote:
And the rumors just keep flying. The latest comes by way of Edge, which reports that Ubisoft is currently working on projects for Microsoft's next console using "target boxes" designed to emulate the system's projected specifications. Supposedly, these boxes contain components provided by Microsoft, with actual development kits expected to be in the hands of studios by the end of the year. According to Edge, a 2012 launch for the console remains likely.

Meanwhile, the site also reports that a "major Sony-owned studio" is no longer working on PlayStation 3 development, fully shifting its resources to the next iteration (we're going to go out on a limb and call it the PlayStation 4). Furthermore, said studio has apparently been "involved in the development process of the graphics technology" used in the upcoming console.
from Joystiq

Interesting? I think so

The Sony dev is Polyphony digital, and they're working on Gran Turismo 6, which will be announced as a PS4 launch title. [troll]Of course it won't actually release until 4 years into the PS4's lifecycyle [/troll]

I'd be willing to bet that most of Sony's internal studios have shifted to PS4 and Vita development, aside from games that are already deep in development, of course. Next year they still have Twisted Metal, Starhawk, The Last Guardian, and probably a new God of War game. I'd guess Microsoft is doing the same thing, with Halo 4 being the last big game they put out on the 360 next year.

Alot of these rumors are confirmations of the much older ones, with the new data of the 6 core from a couple days ago so it seems like perhaps some of it actually may be very close to the truth.
However, the duel core GPU seems a bit off that has been reported in the same places and the memory type and speed, doesn't fit the hexa-core well. There was an excellent writeup about all that elsewhere.

With MajorNelson's poorly hinted bits about CES last week I guess its time to assume the future is now!

I for one am ready for a hardware refresh. The 360 is starting to show it's age. She's still got it... but the crows feet are starting to show.

Not sure if your talking to me or not buf if you are-

I guess when it comes to releases they could actually go with a show that had more to do with games and not the CES which is a different style of venue. And companies have done that before, or done a closed door. But MS has taken a larger bit of the show than usual.

If they have integrated all the other aspects of the xbox into this new system like the front end, the cable delivery systems and so forth. CES is a good place to say "Hey this is our entertainment box" then at E3 state "Hey this is our games box"

You do get the feeling that many of the game series for the current gen are either winding up or winding down.

I'm still hoping 2013 though, 2012 still seems so close, even if it is for the Christmas 2012 period.

We need new IP. We are playing the same games over and over again. I am ready for a refresh.

Just Cause dev says they have their next game planned for "Unannounced consoles" and it will be out in 2014. So I guess thats a good far out date if you take that to mean current gen successors.

I thought that the general concensus was that it would probably be announced at E3 and then released the following year's holiday season. I guess going for it at CES makes sure that MS beats Sony to the announcement though.

I'm going one console and one hend held next generation. I hope I don't get too excited and bite the bullet on the first one released. There is a part of me that thinks I need to stop worrying about consoles because I hardly ever play them anymore but then I think about Hai and what a consoleless life would be like for her early years.

Isn't Halo 4 confirmed for 360 in 2012?
Seems strange to launch a new console then.

Halo 4 is confirmed to be ON the 360 not ONLY for the 360

I am hoping we do not have a Gun situation here where its on both. However, who knows. You can believe or not believe the companies and what they say.

Oconner said this
Quote:
Halo 4 will be on Xbox 360 and use a modified core of the Halo engine(s)," O'Connor wrote on the NeoGAF forums. "Not really a singular engine since it goes through fairly radical evolutions all the time.
Knowing companies and how they work, and how things are worded I could see them releasing it for both. If other rumors, from the same sources, are to be believed Halo 4 offers a pretty big jump from Halo Reach. It would not surprise me if you could get it for either. MS seems somewhat more apt for some of these decisions and I could see them saying.

"Those who don't want to get in on ground level can get Halo 4 on the 360.
Those who want updated res and blah blah blah can get it for the 720."

Additionally though Sabre's work on Halo Anniversary is far from perfect, it does show how duel processes for graphics overlays can work. I could see a Halo 4 on a new system with updated res, effects and so forth but with same gameplay. Who knows.

I could wish I'm only a one console kind of guy, but frankly MS had a huge amount of exclusives I couldn't ignore. If they pull the same trick again I will still buy both even though the Sony exclusives will force me to buy a PS4 at one point.

I'm guessing the PS4 is going to be a different beast then the PS3 was. They don't need to forcepush a format again since BR still has less sales then DVD and people won't adapt to yet another. And the huge leap 360 made in dev. care and ease they can't fall behind yet again.

But I'm still loving my consoles. And have a huge backlog and games I want to buy. I can wait a year or 3 and see how stuff develops. And see if there isn't a red ring in there.
