In Other News...November 4

- All-ages MMO Lego Universe will shut down on January 31. Developer Play Well Studios will be closed as a result. The game just couldn't make enough money after moving to a free-to-play model earlier this year.

- Is there an Easter Egg in Batman Arkham City indicating where the sequel may go? Don't click on this link if you don't want to potentially be spoiled!

- Nintendo has filed for a patent on a device which would turn a WiiMote into a touchpad. Could this be a potential bridge to the WiiU?

- I09 asks: could the Enterprise beam a Vampire into a house he wasn't invited into? If you're anything like me, this question will stay with you a lot longer than it should.

Yes. There are so many varieties of vampire myths, and few of them use the "invited to enter" rule. I'm not sure why they claim that most do, since that's not the case.

If we're assuming it is the kind of vampire that needs to be invited to enter, then still yes. Since the Enterprise transported the vampire in, they granted admission. No vampire rule I ever knew claimed the people who live in the house had to be the ones to invite them.

That's unfortunate. I enjoyed the game during the beta, but I have little interest in paying a monthly fee to play an MMO. I didn't know that the game had gone F2P, otherwise I would have jumped in again. They really squandered a huge opportunity.

In True Blood the vampires have to be invited in by the person who owns the house.

I've never heard of this True Blood so I googled it. I was expecting a novel or maybe a written rework of a classic vampire mythology... oh...
it's a TV show on HBO.

That earns about as much credit with me as referring to Twilight for vampire mythology questions.

So if that case means the person who owns it has to invite them in, I guess renters are completely safe. They don't own the house, so their invitation can't be accepted.
Yeah, I am being pedantic on purpose.

Wouldn't it make sense that the person giving the invitation has to be inside the house? Otherwise it would never be a problem for any vampire with a familiar.

What if the owner of the house is dead? Can an estate invite a vampire in? Or what if it's owned by a corporation? Does the board of directors have to vote to invite the vampire in?

Well, smart ass, the show is based on a series of novels.

Actually that comes up in the fourth season of the show. One of the main vampire characters ends up owning the house that another main character lives in. Since he's the owner and she just lives there, he can come and go as he pleases.

wow..
True Blood is a bit more deep than just an HBO TV show.

And let's see.. invite a vampire to come in.. where do we begin. (wiki)
Quote:
Some traditions hold that a vampire cannot enter a house unless he or she is invited in. Generally, a vampire needs be invited in only once and can then come and go at will. Stephen King's novel Salem's Lot explored an unusual direction with this myth in having one of the protagonists revoke a vampire's invitation to a house; the vampire was forced to flee the building immediately.
And complete catalog of references to said flaw in TVTropes, Vampire Invitation
Quote:
This trope is very old although, oddly enough, its application to vampires begins with Bram Stoker— Varney and Lord Ruthven, for example, never had this problem.
More in the article.

Happened in Vampire Diaries. (from TV Tropes)
Quote:
In a Fridge Logic moment, one man who became a vampire suddenly found himself barred from his own home. Since he lived alone, there was nobody who could invite him inside, and apparently the rules don't regard a vampire as a rightful owner. Gets especially odd when it is confirmed that a vampire can enter a house whose sole inhabitant is dead. The general fan assumption is simply that someone else owns the house.

By the way, TV Tropes is an internet black hole that sucks you in.
Start browsing it, then just look at the sheer number of tabs you've opened and intended to read. Madness.

I do that with Cracked.com and Wikipedia all the time. Don't even ask me how many Cracked tabs I've bookmarked.

Edited for facts.

EDIT:

Also, I believe Buffy vampires would cause the beam to repel.

My opinion: The vampire would be pulverized by the force that typically keeps them out of the house, or at least violently thrown out the door. That's the way I would write it if I were writing such a thing, with vampires that are forbidden from entering uninvited. Of course, there is no hard answer, and it would be entirely up to the writer.

Yup, invitations can be also revoked in True Blood and the vampire is forcibly ejected as if pushed by an invisible hand.

While the Wiimote attachment looks dumb as hell, that is actually a damn clever input system. It uses the same tech found in things like Microsoft Surface.

In fact, it makes me want to try and build my own IR touchpad using a spare Wiimote. I'be even got an extra projector to make it a 'display' too!
