[Gear] Razer DeathAdder (Megatron Version) Review

[Gear] Razer DeathAdder (Megatron Version) Review

Product: [Gear] Razer DeathAdder (Megatron Version)
Platform: PC/MAC
Developer: Razer
MSRP: $59.99
Available: Now
Editor: Jeremy 'Ghostbear' Spurlock

Quote:
What's Hot: Shape is great, mouse is very responsive.
What's Not: Small glides make the mouse move rougher than I would like.
The Razer DeathAdder has been around for a bit and has remained popular. This year they released Transformers branded version and sent me one to look at. Is it worth your hard earned money? Let's find out.

From the very beginning I noticed that the build quality of this mouse is stellar. No cheap feeling plastics or flimsy parts. The cable is braided and is more than long enough to suit most computer setups. The shape is contoured perfectly to the way I tend to hold a mouse, that is with my palm resting on the base of it. For those of you curious about the weight, I'd say this mouse is somewhere in the middle of mouse ranges.

The buttons have a great response and a satisfying click to them. The mouse wheel button is no exception to this. While many gamers lament the use of the mouse wheel in gaming, the DeathAdder is one of the exceptions. The button is wide, and you won't accidentally scroll when frantically trying to hit it.

The mouse is very responsive, with a flick of my wrist I could whip from one monitor to the other or make a quick turn to shoot a digital foe. With a 3500dpi sensor, it's not hard to see why. The rubberized plastic on the outside of the mouse always kept me feeling like I was in control.

Customization options are handled within the software, but you can assign buttons to be sensitivity presets, the unfortunately means you have to sacrifice a button to be able to switch sensitivity on the fly. A minor quibble were that the glides on the DeathAdder did not feel good on my preferred rough mousing service. That said, this was alleviated by switching my mouse pad over to it's smooth side.

What makes this a Transformers mouse you ask? Well, the logo on the palm of the mouse has a glowing Decepticon (or Autobot) logo. The illumination is soft and pulses slowly. There are four versions, Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, Shockwave and Megatron. It is one of the better looking mice I have used. With a device that you see all of the time, it's nice to have something aesthetically pleasing as well as functional.

Score: 4 out of 5 CoGs

Jeremy says, "If you are looking for a great gaming mouse and happen to be a Transformers fan, this is the mouse for you. It is exceptionally well built, looks great and will respond to all your inputs with speed."

I am also giving this mouse away to a random poster. Tell us who your favorite Transformer is and I'll draw randomly from the posts. (North America only).

Razer needs to get on developing a multi-button mouse that isn't the Naga. More buttons!

Great review. At first glance, the angle of the mouse looked really high, but it seems like it is shaped very similar to my G5.

While I am quickly growing to hate the excessive use of LED's in PC peripherals, at least this mouse opts to keep the graphic fairly clean and using a plain white LED. It would be nice to disable it for those of us who prefer not to have a night light in our rooms when we keep our PC on at night. Any way to disable it?

As for my favorite Transformer, how can you go wrong with Optimus Prime?

I have a first gen DeathAdder and never had problems with the slide pads, it is definitely a solid mouse worthy of the rating.

Kup is the only worthy Transformer. He's got a robo-cigar! And he's the old man Transformer who kicks all kinds of ass.

If the control software matches the Lachesis then yes, you can set it to on, pulse or off. Razer seem to shy away from using really bright LED's so it's not that noticeable when you're trying to sleep.

The Lachesis (which I use) may fill that criteria, unless you like 600 button mice.

Actually, the Lachesis is basically like the Deathadder with two extra buttons on the top that are by default set to adjust the DPI in custom amounts.

As far as the review, it matches up exactly to what I've found Razer to be: Great build quality, comfort and functionality though sometimes on the expensive side.

That's a nice looking mouse.

As for favorite Transformers... is Beast Wars okay?
Tigerhawk was my favorite.

Great review and a nice looking mouse.

I always liked the original comics version of Blaster. He was a badass when he was introduced, not like the crazy cartoon version.

My bro has one and I wholeheartedly agree with your analysis of the DeathAdder. It's comfortable, responsive in games, and it's feels really solid. It's definitely a great mouse. That Megatron style is actually really nice. It would look really nice with my Masterpiece Megatron.

There are so many Transformer that I loved when I was a kid and still do. Megatron, Soundwave, Starscream, Swoop, Roller and oddly Blurr. (I talked really fast when I was a kid so I related.)

Is the finish on the top smooth or matte like regular Deathadders?

Also: Rodimus Prime <-- and yes, I know I'm the only one who says that.
