Virtua Fighter 5 Going Downloadable

The next Virtua Fighter game will be downloadable.

Sega today announced that Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown - announced early last year as the definitive arcade version - will be coming to XBLA and PSN in the summer of 2012.

The roster will consist of 19 fighters, including the all new Jean Kujo. Sega touts Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown's "revised mechanics, balance [and] timing" but also say they'll include "simplified controls" for new players. Few things will set off fighter fans more than the idea of "simplified controls", so I hope Sega knows what they're doing.

I can't think of a reason to have fighting games at retail any more. It isn't like a fighting game fills up a disc with assets.

Money, DLC games sell les than boxed games. That's why Capcom puts out all these Super remixes on disc as well.

Okay.

Greed.

I should have said that I can't think of a GOOD reason...

I do like to see how VF has evolved over the years. Loved the first VF in the arcade, had one of them on ps2 and the one on 360.

This series seemed to evolve more than Street Fighter did. With VF there's no Super HD Hyper Fighting Remix 3rd Strike Alpha version.

Yeah, because wanting your game to sell better is greedy.

It's like some of you people have never worked a day in your life and you expect everyone else to just work for free... at least that's how your attitude makes it seem.

What? Putting up a digital copy vs a disc copy means the game won't sell as well? Then why is Sega doing that?

Fighting games sure as hell don't need to be on a disc, so of COURSE they should have digital distribution versions.

What does that have to do with me working?
Seriously.

Greed always gets a bad rap. People always forget ever industrial advance has been pulled kicking and screaming into existence by someone who thought they could use it to make more money.

complaining about a company or group wanting to actually make money from something they have been working on is a common attitude of people who don't work, work very little or expect things to just be given to them (which is even more mind boggling) and it also seems to be a common train of thought among a lot of gamers. Wanting to profit from your hard work is not greedy, wanting to profit from some one else's hard work is.

I know you work, I'm not saying you don't but that attitude just makes you sound spoiled and a bit ignorant (which I'm also pretty sure you are not). It's just thrown around so often it's really starting to get on my nerves so I guess my last comment wasn't really aimed at you specifically but more that train of thought.

So is this a revamped version of VF5? Or is this like the 360 version of the "old" VF5?

Sega is calling it the "ultimate" version of the game. New characters, stages, tweaked & balanced characters. etc.

You know what. At least they waited more than 40 minutes after the last one was released to announce another iteration.

Nice. I've always wanted to give the Virtua Fighter series a fair shake and this looks like a good place to start.

Whoa, yeah.. wow, that is a bit.. weird.

Also the graphics look kind of shit, soort of low polycount. Hmm.

Maybe I will give it a shot if it's a $15 download.

Just like the transition from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 to 3, I understand the reasons for simplifying controls to get a bigger audience, but I still feel that simplification essentially lowers the amount of skill necessary to be effective in the game. Despite all that, I've been a fan of Virtua Fighter since the beginning, so I'll be downloading and playing.
