Dragon's Dogma Screens Ponder the Life of a Pawn

Click to see the rest of the images

Capcom is taking a bit of a risk with Dragon's Dogma. It's a Western-style RPG developed by one of the most influential Japanese developers. It's Daft Punk putting out a country album: it may be a disaster but you're still curious. Today they pulled the curtain back a little more and revealed the Pawn System.

You create your own character - wizard, fighter or strider - and then make a primary Pawn. That Pawn is always AI-controlled. You then recruit 2 other Pawns, selecting them either from a roster of pre-generated Pawns or from a list of your friends' Pawns. As your Pawns have adventures with your friends, they come back to you with added loot, experience and tactical knowledge. It's an odd sort of online connectivity, but it sounds very interesting.

Dragon's Dogma will be released in early 2012 for the 360 & PS3.

Looks like they got a lot of inspiration from Demon's Souls. Hope it turns out well.

This game makes me think of a woman with really nice long legs...like Stacy Keibler!

Are the pawns essentially AI-buddies then, like in Resident Evil 5? If so....yikes.

They're AI buddies. The "Prime" Pawn apparently responds to more complex commands, but the 2 secondary Pawns just run behavior routines. Not unlike a lot of RPGs frankly.

If they are like minions in Torchlight, I am cool.

I guess that could go either way then. We'll have to wait and see.

Dragon's Dogma looks like it is shaping up to be a cross between Monster Hunter and Demon's Souls. I'm Okay with this. The pawns just seem to be good ol minions, probably just Capcom's way of saying "It's dangerous to go alone, take this!"

Assuming people give this thing a chance, I guess it'll be the AI coding that either make or break it. Sadly, when it comes to AI, it usually breaks it.
