Developers Show Off Dual-Screen Gaming on the iPad

News of the Wii U and its tablet-like controller and dual-screen console gaming potential is barely even two days old, and already the competition is looking to make waves. At Apple's WWDC this morning, EA-owned Firemint showed off new gaming functionality that uses Apple's AirPlay "mirroring" technology to pull a reverse Wii U. It streams content from the iPad to your television, in 1080p, with maps and controls sitting on your iPad, and the racing action itself occurring on the TV. The price for entry is likely a bit steeper than a Wii U, requiring the $99 AirPlay unit and (at the very least) a $499 iPad. However, there are quite a few people with iPads already in their possession, and this gaming experience will be available starting this fall.

At the same time, OnLive showed off the upcoming OnLive Player app for both iPad and Android tablets that will allow a gamer to play OnLive games using their tablets. Also available this fall, and also running on your television in HD.

So, is the Wii U already old news even before it's had a chance to shine?

Yeah, I noticed that too. Hopefully it's just because it's a promotional image. The best way to implement this would be to remove ALL hud info from the main screen and put it all on the iPad. I'm betting that Firemint is aware of that.

Which makes me think, people figured out how to make the Wii remote interface with PCs. Once they figure out how to talk to the Wii U controller, perhaps there will be apps to stream audio and video to it?

Still the point of a HUD is that it's a Heads-Up Display, looking down defeats the purpose.

To me, it would make sense to have something like your speed on the main screen since you would have that while driving. But anything else you wouldn't have available to you as you drove, such as position, lap, and lap time, should be on the other screen. Just my opinion, of course. But I see what you're saying.

That looks like a Photoshopped promo. Blame marketing, not the developers.

I wonder if this is part of the reason Nintendo is not selling stand alone controllers. I have to think they can't turn a profit on selling the controller alone and they don't want people buying them for other purposes.

Well it's not like anyone making official software had a fucking clue what to do with your controller, Nintendo.

iPad 3, maybe. I doubt iPad could handle the processor load of rendering two separate images.

You can already do this now in Real Racing, it's just that it requires a wire, the HDMI adapter and an HDMI cable to be precise, which is sort of annoying.

The iPad basically works as a steering wheel with a few bits of info on it, while the game plays on the big screen.

It's not the best use of a dual screen set up, but it's pretty nifty regardless, and now that there's a wireless option I can see it being used a lot more in higher end games like this.

PC has had multi-screen capability for DECADES.

This goes back to one of my original concerns with the Wii U concept, it'll be even easier to add a touchscreen controller to the competition than it was to duplicate and exceed wii's waggle.

Can anyone think of a good application of this - outside multiplayer games - that isn't a colossal waste of technology? Because I've been trying and I can't.

True, but just like Kinect, it's not included with the system and therefore can't be assumed purchased when a game developer sets out to make a game. Not to say that the PS4 and Xbox3 won't come out of the gate with it.

Flight sims, for one. Mech games. Any game, really, that has a surfeit if information to display which could be moved out of the way and let the main screen breathe. For me it's that simple.

I think this could be pretty bad ass for RTS. I could be playing the game on the main screen and be able to look down at the other screen for detailed micro-info/charts/stats/blown up sections of the map.

Hell, you could map the second view screen to a unit (scout) and be able to look down at what it is seeing without losing the view of your main base.

Or... maybe... turn the damn iPad into a keyboard I could use with my console.

Detailed instrumentation and controls.... I'll give you that. No one plays them these days (the fucking heretics) but you're still right.

No that's nothing a mouse click can't accomplish.

A keyboard is more a utility then gameplay device in this instance (though admittedly a useful one).

Strategy games. Something like this would be perfect for a game like Valkyria Chronicles.

Is it steeper for sure? Last I had read, the WiiU was going to be "not cheap." $600 is still way more than I'd pay for a console, but that is what the PS3 was when it first came out.

The iPad would be useful for 3D maps, displaying stats, and for full information of inventory items without having to leave the main game to look at them..
