SOE Announces Payday: The Heist
Sony Online Entertainment and developer Overkill Software have announced Payday: The Heist, a downloadable squad-based shooter coming later this year to the PC and PSN. In Payday: The Heist you and up to 3 friends play through six heist campaigns, ranging from a daylight bank robbery to a midnight infiltration of a top-secret, high-security facility. According to developer Overkill the game's key feature is it's replayability. The environments change dynamically, including changing entry and choke points, and the AI employs adaptive enemy behavior. It sounds sort of like Left 4 Dead sans monsters, which could be a good thing. You also get to choose a specialty - assault, sharpshooter or support - and unlock new equipment by climbing the progression tree. Payday: The Heist should be released digitally later this year, but look for more on it from E3 next week. |

I have to say, that's a brilliant concept for a L4D type of game. I really hope they execute it well, I would play the hell out of that.

My question is if this just plays out like a standard shooter for the most part, of it they build in ways for you to actually pull off clever heists. That would be quite a challenge, to say the least.

There are certainly not enough heist games out there, so I welcome this announcement. It does sound, though, like it will be light on planning/strategy and heavy on shooting/cover, which would be a shame.
The best movie heists are those where the robbers succeed with a mix of trickery and intimidation, and where not a single person on either side is killed. Bullets should only start flying with the plan gets fucked up. My ideal heist game would play out like a reverse version of SWAT 4. One of my favorite features of that game is having a button just for shouting at the criminals to get down and drop their weapons. |

I'd be all about this if it were on 360 or PC, it looks like Kane & Lynch done right. I just hate shooters on the PS3 controller, and their woes of late just make it laugh worthy whenever I talk to other people about playing online with the PS3.

Sounds like they're trying to get some use of out what work was done on that game.

This preview makes it sound more like what I'm hoping it will be.
You don't get to do your own planning, but it does seem to be more than just shooting police in place of zombies. There's a "shout" button!
