To leave the Zune?
I'm having some issues with my old 4gb Zune, and am considering replacing it. Obviously, the rumors are flying about where the Zune brand is going, and it looks like the players are going away while the software will stay around for PCs, the 360, and Windows phones. Well, I don't have a Windows phone, and won't be upgrading any time soon. Plus, I'm willing to have a somewhat larger phone for daily stuff, while I like my Zune for working out because it's relatively small and I prefer not to use up my phone battery on the treadmill.
On the other hand, I love the Zune music service. For a reasonable fee I get to keep 10 songs per month with a la carte access to whatever else I want. I like that the Zune Pass lets me sample a wide variety of music but that I can also pay for and keep the stuff I really like if I cancelled the service. So, what to do? Try to snag a Zune player while they're still out there? Are there other services that would provide the functionality of the Zune software without tying me into one company's players? |

I'm interested in people's opinions as well. I've long been in love with my Zune after some distasteful DRM issues with iTunes. I enjoy that my entire library is available to my 360 and I think that the player has been more than capable. I love that my MS points can be used for games or music.
Sadly, I also know that it's going the way of the dodo at some point.

That's a good point that I forgot, Vermillion. I like having unified points for my 360 and Zune service. It makes filling out the rest of an album that exceeds my 10 free monthly songs easier.
I know it's not going to happen, but if MS is going to get rid of the players, I wish they'd make some kind of deal to support a third party line of mp3 players. I love my Evo 4g, but I'm not going to take it and its extended battery pack on a run, held in my hand. I want something that I can forget is there. |

I love my zune. It's been a great little device. Sadly, it looks like MS is gonna kill it.

If you want to stay away from Apple but still get a neat device, check out products from Cowon:
http://www.jetaudio.com/products I currently have a Cowon S9 and while it's a bit older techwise, it's a great MP3/Video player that can play nearly any file format, both audio and video. No software necessary since it just acts like a HDD when you plug in via USB. Looking at their website, it looks like they've released a few great products since my S9.
