Colony of Gamers Community Game?

No, definitely not. I was talking about what looked like a suggestion to create a bunch of 2D tanks and then switching to 3D and starting the pipeline over later.

Played around with a 3d model off this drawing. I haven't done this in a very very very long time. Also, still very much in low polygon mode. Detail to come.

Let's just get a few things straight...I'm not your manager nor have I been asked to manage this project. This isn't work right now this is a video game forum that we all come to so we can escape from work. If you're the type of person who is incapable of handling criticism or competing ideas then maybe this isn't your thing. You also shouldn't expect us to provide lengthy descriptions of our preferences this early in the game when you don't seem to hold yourself to that same standard. If you want to make a card game then sell us on the idea...don't cry when someone else suggests a different genre in more or less words.
I thought a very late response of

Fuck You

...was appropriate here, Assassin.

Who is the person that can't stand with confidence behind what he posts on the internet? That would be you, glaringly.

So, now that I brought this thread back from the dead, what's up?

You brought this thread back from the dead to berate someone who can't even read it? Nice one...

Apparently this project went the way of the dodo.

Oh, he can definitely read it. Respond? He will eventually, probably as a 'female' board member this time.

First off, Torque is probably not a great choice. It's sat idle for a few months and is 99$ a seat. So, you get 16 or 17 people involved, thats 1600$.

If you pursue this, Ogre3d is a good fit and Unity 3d is probably a much much much better fit and is available for basically free.

All that said, picking an engine is premature, the genre you go with will fit better with some engines than others. As will the platform(s) you choose to target. First and foremost, you need a game idea AND a designer/owner who controls the idea before you can really recruit in any form or make technical decisions.

Second, making a game is hard. Very hard, think about how hard you might think it is and multiply it by two and you are halfway to halfway there. Next, working in a remote group is much harder. Your asset management, source control, project management and various other tasks essentially double and become a fulltime task for a few people.

Third, games require a dictator. Too many cooks spoil the broth, two many designers just sit around making concept sketches that never go anywhere, ever.

Forth, 3D is 5 times harder than 2D. More from a asset perspective than a coding perspective, but frankly the coding is harder too. There is a reason why free 2D games are so common ( think NewGrounds or various TD games ) while 3D games are much more scarce and shittier in quality.

Fifth, volunteer designers and writers are in massive abundance, volunteer coders and artists are in much shorter supply, coders and artists with the actual skill required are almost impossible to find, unless you set your artistic and technical complexity VERY low. All that said too, although finding a designer or writer to volunteer is easy, finding ones that can actually do the job and in a way that works in a team setting.... good luck.

Sixth, if you do find coders and artists that are capable of doing such work, there is a booming market for iPod/Android games that can actually result in a paycheck. This is what will make recruiting really tricky these days, as if someone is sufficiently skilled to make a game, they can make a game and actually make money doing it.

Seventh, 99.999% of these threads die on the vine, its just the nature of things. I am been involved in game development to a varying degree for a long time, and have been very active in CG art and game dev forums in the past and these threads NEVER lead to a completed project, ever. At best you see a 0.01b alpha release, and even that is extremely ultra scarce. Mods are about the only exception to this rule and there is a reason for that. Mods are "part" of a game, and the fun parts at that. Even then, the vast majority of mods are complete shit too. And the really good ones almost always end up going pro in the end anyways.

Eighth, games are hard, did I mention that?

That said, best of luck to you all. Even working towards that 0.01b beta can be damned fun.

But if you really want to do something together as a community, I would recommend doing something like a NWN mod together, or something of similar scope.

.... called it.

Man I got tons of game ideas on the back burner. I'm just looking to build my own graphics and physics engine one day. I don't care how complicated a task it is, but Eh something to do while I'm in school. One day I'd like to collaborate with some CoGs and make a game.

Since this is back from the dead....

All I can do is write. And I can convince my wife to do some concept art, but that's all I got

I say we do a sort of Biomotor Unitron type of game, which would be pretty easy to impliment, and tack on story elements, etc.

I haven't played the game in years, but basically think a turn based Armored Core + Final Fantasy. You were this pilot of a mech, and you had arena battles (I think you won the game when you beat the top tier) You could customize the mechs (head parts, weapons, legs, etc) and those parts gave you stats and/or resistances. I can't remember if you won parts from defeated foes, but you could also explore areas around the arena to farm for parts as well, etc. It was a pretty basic game (Most for the Neo Geo Pocket Color were, save Card Fighter's Clash...fucking LOVED that game) but a lot of fun. The CoGers could be the pilots, etc.

EDIT: And yeah, I say go with 2D. Maybe even make a kickstarter for it

I'm down for getting this going. I don't believe we need to do a Kickstarter though. LOL! For an engine, could we please use the Lightweight Java Game Library along with Java?? Pretty please??

How much does it cost? I've got 300 bucks coming to me from the government that I need to throw at something.

Nothing at all. It was used to make several popular games too, one of them being Minecraft.

Well, suggest something to me. My wife is on board for character concept art and I'm on board to help fund a good chunk of this.

I just talked with the Starfarer developer and he suggested the LWJGL as well. He sent me the projects webpage for other examples of what has been done - http://www.lwjgl.org/projects.php
