Starfarer: Combine Star Control 2, Escape Velocity, and pure Awesome.

Now that I have your attention. Imagine: Space Combat game with ship building, modular design, RPG development, system controls, and full piloting of your own ship. 2d no less, in that old awesome vein of the great old games.

Ladies, Gentlemen, and whatever Shrin is with that avatar, we have Starfarer.

Link to the Starfarer Site

Our new Dev Friend David Baumgart (That name is awesome) tuned me on to this game. The game looks to be released this year, and the site itself has lots of concept art, Pew pew information, and a FAQ that has me drooling in hope. Let's try to get out some buzz for it.

Za Video!

I'd like to say something pithy and Lekonic, but all I can say is "do want"

And Lo, let him lead us to more gaming gems. Big props to David (and the rest of his teammates); he's got not one, but two awesome games in the works.

I wish. I'm much more the Terror that Flaps in the Night. I can't take credit for finding Starfarer, usually I go through various indie sites and go "oooh, hello" and check things out. David recommended Starfarer to me, and damn glad he did.

Escape velocity you say? Is there any trading, taking on missions etc. or just pure combat arenas?

Funny, that was almost my reaction upon seeing the site. "Hey this looks kinda neat... oh deargod. I want this now. Oh man. Must have. Holy hell, you get carriers too? You can haz fleet?"

Yeah, I was going "squee".

kyrieee- I don't know about trading, but I'm pretty sure I saw something about missions and infrastructure of planets. I'd assume since you can take over planets and build them up, that there'd be some sort of mission and trading mechanic built in to that.

Yeah, I'll quote the FAQ because it's awesome:

Quote:
The economic model in Starfarer strives for one thing – to let you make meaningful choices. For example, you know a planetary system has a certain illegal, secret weapons shipment headed its way. If it arrives, the rebels there will destabilize the planet, making it a ripe target for takeover. Do you wait, biding your time until the weapons hit the streets? Do you intercept the shipment and gain good will with the planet’s governor? Or do you join the smugglers with a shipment of your own to speed up the planet’s downfall? The choice is yours.

This looks an awful like Gratuitous Space Battles, except a good bit prettier. And with more gameplay.

You mean *with* gameplay. All GSB had was building ships then tossing them in and hoping. This one lets you pilot your death sta... big ship.

I like GSB, but I suspect I'll never play it again if I buy this game.

Well, you had the whole "orders" thing with GSB that basically let you program your fleet to behave a certain way in certain situations, but yes, this looks to have a lot more of the "real-time interaction" kind of gameplay.

Hey, very cool to see everyone excited about Starfarer :D

To give some background:
Starfarer is not being developed by Gaslamp Games (which is the company I'm a founding partner with, which is making Dungeons of Dredmor) but rather by Fractal Softworks, which is essentially one designer/coder, a fellow named Alex. He's hired me to do all the graphics for Starfarer ... except gotta give some cred to NASA for the backgrounds. The sound guy for Dungeons of Dredmor, Matthew, is also doing some sound work for Starfarer.

I won't give many details about Starfarer without more explicit permission from Alex, but I really think it's going to turn out beautifully. Alex is an old school gamer who is shooting for the depth and appeal of those classic games but with updated graphics and good ui/usability. Working for him has been lots of fun, he's been really open to feedback -- and he's definitely working hard to get everything just right. The combat is already, ahem, a blast; when I'm supposed to just be testing graphics I find myself having to finish the combat mission.

Maybe if ya'll harass him on his blog he'll release another trailer ;)

New video up, this is the dev testing out ship AI, with the most fun way possible. Namely: sandbox full of ships fighting until the boom.

Lot of neat looking things in there. I'm wondering if those are directed shields, or if that zappy effect is a stun or just the heavy damage warning.
