Oscars, do you give a $@%&?

Easy poll really, does something winning an Oscar affect your desire to see a movie?

Myself, no, fuck the Oscars. Pretentious bunch of douchebags, resulting in a number of pretentious fucking films designed specifically to farm oscars.

Hell, Rotten Tomatoes has more bearing on me watching a movie than Oscars ever will.

Winning an Oscar doesn't necessarily make me want to see a movie, but attention from the academy (wins, nominations, etc.) at least piques my curiosity. I've looked into movies after the awards that I wouldn't have paid any attention to otherwise.

No, the Oscars don't make me want to watch a movie I wouldn't otherwise watch. I do enjoy watching the Oscars, though, to see if the movies I DID want to watch were good judgments on my part.

I like filling out ballots.

Oscars, or awards in general, have no influence on my decision on whether to see or not see a movie.

That said, I was rooting for Hurt Locker over Avatar last year.

Most award shows are things that I avoid. I might be interested in a a list of nominees and winners if I'm familiar with one of the works, but for the most part winning doesn't necessarily mean I'm going to like it.

You know, I've been thinking about this... With some movies I'll actually go out of my way to avoid them if they've been showered with Oscars. The most recent example of this is Slumdog Millionaire. I was almost interested in it until everyone started fawning all over it. Now I have zero desire to ever see it.

Usually yes. Depends on the movie. But I am an artsy fartsy. Hate musicals though.

I'll go see a movie if I want to go and see it. A-Team got trashed by reviews, I liked it and bought it on bluray (same with GI-Joe). I look at Ebert's site to see what he's reviewed for the week but rarely open the review article - look at the stars given and read the brief paragraph. I've gone to see some movies based on ebert's reviews like Harry Brown and The Square that were really good.

Other movies I base on what I think of the trailer. I wanted to see Tron Legacy when I saw the first trailer, by the 'final' trailer and tv-spots i am not going to go see it now.

There are times where while watching a movie I think 'hey this could win something this year' - hurt locker was one of them.

I find it funny to see the reviews on tv-spots where 'this chick from some small hick town newspaper raves Movie of the year", same goes for games - on the back of Rouge Warrior there was a 'best multiplatform action this year" - by some no-name game site... yeah that game was shit.

I like it when a movie I like gets an Oscar, because I want it to get recognition and exposure, but I don't usually even know if movies I watch have any Oscars or other awards.

I voted yes in the bipolar poll, and this is basically my more nuanced answer.

I generally disagree so intently with the choice of winners, that I'm often like Fitbabits and avoid movies that get a lot of Oscar praise. As soon as they gave Jennifer Hudson an Oscar, I put them in the same category as the Grammys, which is the worst award in recorded human history.

I have a few friends for whom the Oscars is their annual Superbowl.

Oscars are great. I can't believe all the hate they are getting here. Movies that win Oscars are usually the forefront of the industry in terms of quality. I'm not sure how people can dispute that. There's been a few upsets over the years, but nothing to be angry about.

It was a pretty weak year in that category, but fair is fair, she was actually pretty good in Dreamgirls.

While winning Oscars doesn't make me watch a movie anymore, getting nominated drastically increases the chances of the movie theaters around here getting the movie.

I normally look into whatever the oscar winning/nominated films are for the given year. They don't make me want to watch those movies, but they do pique my curiosity. And I always pay attention to the soundtrack/score awards.

I don't know, I'm still pretty fucking pissed that Shakespeare in Love beat Saving Private Ryan.

Wasn't it Life is Beautiful? And yes, I was very angry about that too.

edit: I might be thinking of best actor when Hanks got snubbed.

Agreed. No one is making movies specifically to win an Academy Award as if there's a formula. Complete bullshit.
