Now that you went and reminded me, I updated the OP with the japanese/north american release dates.
![]() I had known about them, but I had forgotten to update the thread back when Capcom announced the dates. |

A *** in the machine.

Am I right in thinking that The Mercenaries only features environments from (or similar to) RE5? That really kills it for me, I specifically avoided RE5 because of that desert shit. I think I'll be waiting for Revelations.

Edit they actually had a good variety of levels in the mercenaries version of RE5, including areas that weren't in the game proper. Last edited by KamaItachi; 03-23-2011 at 06:21 PM. |

It's a mixture of locales from both Resident Evil 4 and 5.

Hopefully this applies to the other territories, for when Resident Evil: The Mercenaries ships in Japan, it will include a demo of Resident Evil: Revelations. (Andriasang)

They're really just recycling a lot of the same information that's been about since the game was announced. The skill sets are really the only new info there.
Still, I'm pumped for this. |

Took a trip down to Kyushu this weekend so had a lot of shinkansen time to sit and give this game a go.
First I played the Revelations teaser which was a bit useless. It's only about 5 minutes long, you walk through a few corridors (I think on a ship? Could just be another underground lab), nothing is interactive at all except for a few doors (but most are locked) and you kill 3 monsters then the demo ends. Then I started playing the main game and it's pretty fun. The controls are mostly responsive and good, but there are a few annoyances (and I never had any problems with RE4/5 controls) such as not being able to pick up ammo or do a quick turn while reloading. I can't remember if that was the case in RE4/5 but I never had a problem with it, but because these environments feel a bit smaller/tighter/more corridoory I have more than once been needing to retreat while reloading but unable to pick up my spoils as I do so. I guess it might be a design choice and it DOES make for more close calls, but it feels more annoying than an understandable constraint you have to work within (like no moving while aiming in RE4, which again, I didn't mind at all). There's about 8 characters to unlock, as well as a bunch of perks that you can collect and level up, and achievements for kill streaks/levels finished/items used etc etc. I've only unlocked about 10 perks and most of the ones I've tried don't seem to do much at all, but I'm hoping that if I level them up a bit that will change. It also feels like there's not too much to do... There are 5 levels, each with 3-5 missions within them, and they are spread over a variety of stages from RE4 and 5. Each mission is basically just survive as long as you can (get as many time extensions as you can) and get the highest score possible (more points for chaining kills). Melee kills give you +5 seconds on your timer, but they take a few seconds for one to execute, so they don't do a lot for your time, especially some of the characters with weak melee which don't always kill in one hit. It seems the main thing you are supposed to do is just replay those various stages over and over to get a rank with every single character in each of their costumes. Costumes are entirely cosmetic so far as I can tell but you have a separate rank/scoreboard slot for using the same character in their alternate outfit, which makes it really feel to me like they were trying to pad out the "things to do" list. From reading the achievements I think there is also an "EX" level you can unlock after finishing all 5 levels, but even then there are multiple missions which use the same map, just with a different spawn point/time limit, so don't expect a huge amount of content. It's definitely a more full game than Mercenaries has been in the past, but it's very much a game you have to enjoy replaying for the sake of high score, as you will "finish" it very quickly. I haven't tried online yet, however, and if it runs smoothly I think the game would be a lot more fun in that mode than in singleplayer. I think you can only do some missions co op, though, not every one (about 30% had a "Duo" label next to them which I think is the co op mode). This has also been the worst game for me to play with 3D on; after only about 30-45 minutes, looking up I could no longer read the text on an advertisement on the far wall of the train, which I COULD read before I started playing... No other games have screwed with my vision and given me focusing problems like that. It was actually a little scary, but went away within 15 minutes. It's also not as good looking as the screenshots and promo videos would have you believe, mainly due to lack of AA. The lighting is occasionally pretty nice, though, especially in the revelations teaser. Anyways, despite my overall negative impressions here, I think it's a cool game, and a solid handheld port of the mercenaries mode. Just don't go into it expecting a huge amount of content that will take you a long time to get through, unless you love repeating the same levels for high scores with different characters again and again. Will try the co op some time this week. Last edited by Lon Lon Rabbit; 06-06-2011 at 12:10 AM. |

I played this a couple of days ago. I'm really excited, it feels a like a true sequel to the original gameplay style the series was known for. Great graphics, the controls were responsive, at one point made me jump enough to make the booth girl laugh.

Thanks for he impressions, Lon. This sounds like more of the same, which is exactly what I was after. I guess the picking up items/quick turn thing might have been a concession for letting you move and fire?
If you try out the online, let us know how you go. I've found the online portion of the 3DS to be spotty at best, but it may be better for non-fighting games. |
