[Rumor] Next Mass Effect Is a Call of Duty-Style Shooter

Remember that image above from yesterday? It's from the new Bioware game set to be announced at the VGAs. According to a Kotaku source, the game is a new Mass Effect title. But it's not Mass Effect 3, or even an RPG. Instead it's a multiplayer-focused shooter developed by Bioware's Montreal studio. The single player campaign will put you in the shoes of a character other than Commander Shepard, while the multiplayer mode will revolve around Call of Duty-style level progressions. The rumor doesn't say where in the greater Mass Effect storyline this game would fall.

For the moment, this is all still a rumor but a number of signs pointing towards this can be seen. Back in September the Montreal studio placed job listings for a "military genre FPS", and former Raven Software (Wolfenstein, Quake 4, Singularity) lead designer Manveer Heir joined the team back in June.

When talking about this last night after seeing the Joystiq rumour I went away from discussion thinking that this is an strange fit. I am interested in their take on it for sure but it just seems strange to me.

I'll be disappointed if that's the case, but as I said yesterday, I think it's highly likely.

I've seen other people speculate that this takes place before ME1 during the first contact war between the humans and the turians.

Hmmmm, FPS and Mass Effect? There could be worse ideas out there. I'm a fan of both so I say bring it on.

Huge fan of the Mass Effect universe but I have no desire for a multiplayer shooter. Yawn.

I'll be really pissed if they put major plot elements in there, too.

"BioWare" really means nothing in this instance, it's totally new people working on this game. If they hired some amazingly talented ones then maybe it could be good but some Raven guy? Meh

If it's a straight up FPS with no biotic powers I'll be super disappointed. Why even make it an FPS? Keep the RPG parts ffs, make if like Deus Ex if you want it to be first person.

As I said in the other thread, I think the classes and races from the original game series will make a solid translation into an FPS. There are already six classes that became really distinct in Mass Effect 2, and all have their place on a battlefield.

Then you have the potential of different races with unique stats and abilities. I'd be disappointed if you couldn't at least choose between Human, Turian, and Krogan. Asari, Batarians, Salarians, Quarians, and Drell if they're feeling bold.

Bioshock 2 did a decent job of melding powers with shooting in MP, as did Shadowrun. So there's a precedent. I could definitely see some strategic tech and biotic powers functioning in an FPS. Hell, most of the perks and things of that nature in CoD function as powers from a design perspective.

That begs another question. What style of shooter? Do they go the Battlefield route with vehicles and 32+ simultaneous players? Something more intimate along the lines of Ghost Recon or Rainbow Six? Or a straight up CoD clone?

If the rumor is true I'm going to pass since I feel that the combat in ME2 was the weakest part. I love Bioware stories but hate their gameplay.

I should have been more clear I meant to say I will not buy but I may check it out on gamefly. All Bioware games have been instant buy for me but after ME2 that has changed.
